I am keeping an open mind, maybe it will improve the spectacle, we don't know if the away goals rule is better or worse until we try a season or two without it. Who knows, maybe teams will be more adventurous at home without the fear of conceding an away goal.

Commenting on the abolishment of the away goals rule, UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin said:

?The away goals rule has been an intrinsic part of UEFA competitions since it was introduced in 1965. However, the question of its abolition has been debated at various UEFA meetings over the last few years. Although there was no unanimity of views, many coaches, fans and other football stakeholders have questioned its fairness and have expressed a preference for the rule to be abolished.?

Mr Čeferin added: ?The impact of the rule now runs counter to its original purpose as, in fact, it now dissuades home teams ? especially in first legs ? from attacking, because they fear conceding a goal that would give their opponents a crucial advantage. There is also criticism of the unfairness, especially in extra time, of obliging the home team to score twice when the away team has scored.?

?It is fair to say that home advantage is nowadays no longer as significant as it once was,? the UEFA President concluded. ?Taking into consideration the consistency across Europe in terms of styles of play, and many different factors which have led to a decline in home advantage, the UEFA Executive Committee has taken the correct decision in adopting the view that it is no longer appropriate for an away goal to carry more weight than one scored at home.? UEFA

Time will tell. They have researched the number of goals scored by the home team and seen a decline. They feel the home team are now scared of conceding to an away team, so play defensively.

However, if they were old enough to watch the games before the rule was introduced when the away team parked the bus and every possession they owned, they might have left things as they were.

Without the away rule we would have had extra time against roma :redbeard:

And without the away goal rule, there probably wouldn't be a remontada against PSG. There would be no point to risk it and going all out for the 6th if there will be extra time.

Also no win against Chelsea in 2009, who knows how the extra time would have played out in that game.

I am against it personally. How is it unfair? It is harder to score away than at home. So, away goals should matter more. Perfectly reasonable.

It makes sense.
Rule came in place because the circumstances were different all around Europe. Different pitch sizes, different balls, traveling was more stressful etc. If you look at the statistics, you will see that the number of home wins have decreased significantly.
