O Callaghan beats Titmus to the 200 m freestyle in the women - new Olympic record. O' Callaghan was behind leading into the last 50 but really turned up the speed on the last lap.

Looks ok to me if it was made like that. Much work for that to happen though. On the subject of stadia and without going too far off topic (as this seems the most relevant thread to put it) has anyone been to the SoFi stadium? I haven't, but loads of people who have say it is an incredible...

100 m women breaststroke was a great race. Very close. Smith from South Africa with the gold. Irish girl with a bronze - first Irish Olympic swimming medal since 1996.

Ceccon the Italian gold in 100 m backstroke. He came right through at the end when it looked like the American Murphy went too fast too early and slowed at the end. Murphy then finished in third. Looking forward to the battle between the two Aussie girls in the 200 m freestyle.

Good post. Agree. It's often better to get an inferior player (as long as he's still good) but one who suits your particular team and what you are trying to do. I sometimes feel fans get fixated on comparing players side by side in teams, while overlooking just how well one team plays with...

He was really good. I seen his semi-final last night and he won that too. Great to see him win gold, and good to see it from a country that isn't one of the Olympic traditional superpowers.

Fair enough. I see your point of view anyway. But I think he's better than you claim. Just a difference of opinion. Though I would also make the point that there are very, very few players in the world who are genuinely transformative. I tend to agree though that in a top European club team...

    Manchester United

They'll never follow Arsenal's trajectory (and I am not convinced that Arsenal won't fall back into the pack again themselves). United's biggest problem is that they cannot play possession, controlling football - poor counter-attack football is built into their ethos as a club. Only Real Madrid...

True, that's another issue entirely. He's obviously a good player but his injury record is a red flag too. It always seems a waste when someone is talented but cannot stay fit. Lisandro Martinez is one of the few Man United players I actually rate fairly highly but the guy is injured often.

Yeah I agree he could be one of Barca's best players right now. But I just mean, for Barca to get back to the level you wanna be at, you need to A) sign really top players or more likely B) keep developing these La Masia products to the level they reach their potential and become better players...

    Nico Williams

Fair enough, I tend to agree as I am impressed every time I watch him. I think the overall point is that, no player, no matter how good (unless Messi or Maradona or Pele), can improve a team to massive levels. Barca need to improve to beat RM to the title, and that will only come with becoming...

I agree he can play for Barcelona, but to be fair YouTube videos are by their design intended only to show the good parts of a player. He's obviously not world-class, but he could be a good, supplementary player for a team like Barcelona. As I have said many times though, he impresses me every...

That's basically what I was saying yeah. £100m sounds a lot for a guy like Williams if he continues to develop it isn't really. Defensive midfielders who are good not great are moving for that these days. He's definitely worth £60m now in this inflated market, and like you say you won't get...

    Nico Williams

Fair enough lol I think mediocre is very harsh of him to say. He's a good player, on his day very good. Yes he's not one of the best players in the world, and isn't transformative like a world-class player would be, but he could do a good job as a supplementary player at a top club. However, I...

I don't mean he's good enough for a CL team that goes deep into the knockouts. Even a EL level player can be a quality player imo. It's like how Dalot is a decent player but would get nowhere near a team battling for the PL or CL. It's all relative - I agree he's not world class or anything...

Some of them are starting to get carried away again - as always before any football has been played. But to be fair plenty of others are playing down expectations as they have been there and seen it all before in the last decade. Yoro being potentially injured could be a problem for them...

Olmo is a very good player as an attacking midfielder. But he's not a winger in a million years. He's not even a false winger ie an attacking midfielder coming off the side. If he plays for a team I'd say he has to play behind a striker or as an advanced midfielder, exploiting that space...

Lionel "The Greatest of All Time" Messi V2

I see you discuss seriously now and then, it's all good. Thanks, football is a game of opinions and some will agree with me and others will think I am not making any sense. The important thing is I fully believe what I say in this instance - you cannot tell how good a player is from stats, you...

Thanks, that's very kind. To be honest with you I enjoy yours too, and many people's to be fair. Some decent football debate on here.
