It'a a typical pen obtained by a pro diver. On the surface it is a pen, but if you spend some time looking at it from all angles, it is not.

This Madrid side have some of the best divers in the history of the game.

They are usually called that is for sure. Obtaining pens like this is also part of the skillset of attacking players, wether you think this is fair or not.

Yeah but here the angle is totally in the attacker's favour. The defender is bringing him down from behind from a ridiculous angle which makes it a clear penalty.

There are way better dives where the attackers totally sell it with their diving skills even though the defender is in a much better position than this.

Mbappe is a better diver.

We can only see it from one angle, which absolutely affects whether this is a penalty or not. If other angles do not show contact when Vinicius goes down, it is clearly not a penalty. Maybe Spanish VAR is refusing to release because it will show what they do not want us to see. 🤭

Question is if contact is made after the ball is out of the pitch, is it still a foul?

From the slowed down replay it is clear that
1) Bill Cosby dives
2) player touches ball
3) ball exits pitch as contact is made.

The only technicality is it is a challenge from behind.

But breaking it down it is a clear case of simulation, and not diving over a tackle to avoid contact.

This referee gave three penalties this match (one for Sociedad). He had to give Madrid two to make up for the one given to Royal Society.
