They need to hold them in the race for the league to get at least some viewership. After PL ran away and LaLiga teams becoming trash, the only remaining reason to watch it, is the Madrid Barca rivalry. And since Madrid is absolutely dogshit, they will do anything to keep them in the race.
Wouldn't surprise me if they got the information to try for penalties, until the ref gives them one.
