9 - Robert Lewandowski

Prime Lewandowski's first touch was just incredible

Really sad to watch a washed up version of him playing

This is his signature aerial ball reception. I remember he received a standing ovation when he pulled this off in one of the Bayern matches.

Unfortunately, this requires a great deal of fitness which deteriorates as the body gets old.

I was watching the last Barca match on ESPN with English commentary.
After Lewandowski got his goal, I heard the guy exclaim "that's the best poacher of the last two decades!"
I was taken aback a little not knowing whether I should rejoice or resent.
The word poacher, intuitively, sounds more pejorative and condescending than praising, does it not? It felt like ... he was the best Penalty Box vulture...but that would be very unfair in my book.
To me, a non native English speaker, it sounds phonetically ugly...an ugly English language word....what about you?
Does the word "poacher" denote something rather positive or not?

It's not that deep. He is a great poacher but he isn't only a great poacher. He's a great poacher and a great all round forward. Both are true.

Funny thing is RL9 was always talked about as a complete technically gifted forward in his Dortmund and early Bayern days. That's the primary reason why Klopp and Guardiola (who were allergic to traditional strikers/poachers) loved him. People used to rave about his technical superiority and all round game more than his goals.

Until he started scoring for fun. That's when people were threatened by his greatness. They suddenly realised that he was better than their favourite strikers because he could do it all. So they started coping by creating this "poacher" narrative.

People just didn't like that a guy from Poland who was never a Wonderkid just came outta nowhere and worked his way up to be the best. Some people are still coping till date.

Prime Lewandowski was the most complete striker and had zero weaknesses in his game. Even other complete strikers like Kane and Benzema had some glaring weaknesses in their game like lack of pace/mobility and inconsistent finishing/goalscoring instincts.

Imo, the 2nd best striker of his generation, Suarez was slightly better than him Imo. His buildup play doesn't reach that of Suarez but he really was very special during his prime especially in 2019-20 where he was robbed of a Ballon d'Or.

If he was french the 2020 ballon d'or would be awarded to him by now

It's simply ridiculous. It's ok if you cancelled it back then because of covid but now that time is passed and all is normal we should give him credit

Very very unfair to Lewandowski. Don't know why he is not more vocal about this. As humble as you are having a bdor makes big difference in career

Rags style of play should never be at Barca, about as bad as Ibra. Also never want a semi-retired striker to join ever again. But Yamal's the only player I enjoy at Barca never thought would get this bad.

What's the point of doing that? Nothing will change.
