Wayne Rooney

Fully agree with this statement, even though I was so excited about him during his Everton days that I bought a Rooney jersey back in 2003 😂
Thanks. Yeah he was a world-class player really, but there were other more technically and aesthetically pleasing players. When he pulled off a great shot or pass though it looked spectacular.

Also, I will always respect him as a player for putting his ego to the side and doing a lot of donkey work for Ronaldo in their time at man U (Tevez also), despite those two being excellent players in their own right.

A black mark is him trying to get out of United in 2010, when he could see they were gonna start slipping. I don't blame him for that but shows he lacks loyalty.

As for Everton, I watched the goal against Arsenal live in 2002. He did look special. And at Euro 2004 he was absolutely spectacular, particularly against France. But then he got injured.

He was never able to recreate Euro 2004 though and was pretty rubbish in most other international tournaments. Maybe he benefitted from being a mature body as an 18-year-old and his explosiveness, as well as a little of an unknown quantity.

Rooney peaked when he was about 23/24. After that he was still a brilliant player but he had lost a bit of his explosiveness. He had a fantastic career, yet I don't think he fulfilled all of his early potential. He was genuinely unplayable as a teenager. Too quick, too strong, too good.

Kane more consistent but Rooney at his best was better

He was getting legit best itw shouts before his injury against Bayern and Messi's 4 goals vs Arsenal

Yes, I understand. I watched that season and lived through it. He was excellent until his injury, but it was more of a poaching game he was playing compared to his usual great all-round game. Not saying that's not good, but he was a bit hyped up by the media (then flopped in South Africa).

I know how good young Rooney was - just that I am a massive fan of Kane and would take him over many strikers of the last 20 years. What I love about him is that he combines goalscoring and playmaking so seamlessly. However, there are holes in his CV too (but same with Rooney and most players).

Thoughts? Guy has a point, despite all the sheep destroying him. Rooney was a great player, but much like Gerrard he has taken on Godhood status in England.

I'd take guys like Aguero and Kane over him without thinking twice but some idiots act like that's blasphemy. He definitely has the Man United PR hype going for him

'Does not come anywhere close to the likes of Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane, Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Erling Haaland, etc. in terms of Premier League strikers.People will look at you as you have comitted mass murder to say the above are better than him'

I don't agree with Haaland but I agree with the other four.

I mean comments like this totally prove the guy's point :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

'Wayne Rooney is right up there with the greatest of players the Premier League has ever seen. Arguably the most complete player of the PL era. That being said, he's the best player to have played for England in the last 30 years, comfortably and by a fair margin.'

So complete he was a disaster in CM as I always said he would be, despite absolute morons saying for years he'd move back there in his 30s and run the show.

We are looking at what's a best individual in what is a team game - so there's ALWAYS going to be split opinions.
That's my point, and the point of the boy making the post.

Those guys act like kane and aguero are nobody compared to rooney - when i think you can make excellent cases for them both being comfortably better. Just as you can make a case for him being better than them.

They don't have half his hype or media backing.

Found this a very ironic comment on a Facebook thread.

Why do these guys embarrass themselves like this? Makes the statement in the first sentence then proves he is exactly what he is describing with the second. This is something I have noticed - people call others clueless then follow it up with the most hyperbolic, deluded comment possible.

'You haven't got a clue about football if you think Rooney was overrated. His technical ability was as good as anyone who's ever played the game.'

which is what I've been saying and why I keep quiet. There's never a consensus and everyone thinks everyone who doesn't agree with him is clueless.

The thing is, this isn't a matter of opinion.

Saying Rooney has as much technical ability as anyone who has ever played the game is like saying Superbad is as good as any film in history.

I can't prove it is incorrect like I am able to if someone says 5 plus 5 equals 9, but it's as close to an objective lie as any subjective opinion can be.
