Didn't Nico himself request a loan move to Valencia? He wanted more minutes cause at that time Busi, Pedri, Frenkie, Gavi, Kessie were all in midfield. There wasn't much room for him.

Then he was injured a lot and club decided to let him go to Porto.

Plenty players request loan moves if dont think will play much.

Xavi was hell bent on single pivot at that point and didnt think Nico would play much and preferred likes of Kessie.

By the following summer he preferred Gundogan.. who Barca paid about same for over 1 season as got from Porto for Nico.
