We did play a good team in Newcastle. Rayo are a good team also. We haven't faced much vs Valencia for example.

There are games and games. We have enough experience as fans to know which are the tricky games beforehand. Rayo and Newcastle, hardest matches on paper in the first 5. And they were. Especially Rayo who played a great game vs us.

We anticipate Getafe will be a low score game even at home. And it will probably be one.
All our issues have been defensive and only if I were to nitpick offensively then I would say build-up. So playing a team like Getafe where it would be difficult to score doesn't ring an alarm bell to an issue the way the Newcastle game would. I will never be okay with allowing high quality chances so often regardless of who is our keeper. Especially in a team where we are so lopsided in quality when referencing the attack and defense.

It is not that you allow it. They happen almost by default when you play higher level opposition. Despite people bashing La Liga, last season we had a poor period and it was enough for likes or Las Palmas and Leganes to slap us at home and beat us. 2 relagated teams that season.

We have to accept this and push despite that. There is no team around that dominates at all times. All get put in serious problems and get it done however they can, keeper being a standout and part of that mix that get you wins is not unusual. Let's not forget PSG scraped through vs Villa with a top performance by Donnarumma last season.

As said, we are good, but not great enough to shut down good teams and block them from having good chances almost completely. We can be got at, and were got at last season. A top level keeper tackles that cheaper and faster than 3 top level signings that would be needed otherwise to upgrade the entire backline.

Chances happen by default is correct, chances happening as often as they do and at the quality they occur is systematic considering our position as a team. My problem as I stated before, is the regularity. You think it's a coincidence that we concede chances the same exact way to any TEAM all the time. The celta vigo comeback last season was emblematic of what I'm referencing now for example or the Dortmund game or the Inter game. This specific issue has been happening for a long time, we concede chances/ goals either through set pieces or a switch of play and cross across the box, or a deep run. Acknowledging that these things will happen isn't the problem obviously, it is how often. You just have a higher chance of actually being punished by higher level opposition. Our bad period coincided with Lamine being injured, which is a whole other topic in itself but I digress. I refuse to just accept how often we concede the same types of chances because I have standards and an ambition to overcome the regularity of those conceded chances to allow for Barca to get over the hump.

They didn't happen as often. Newcastle had something like 1.5xG. Still lowish, showing not a world class defensive performance, but a good one still. Probably Newcastle sould have scored 2 but Garcia was great and kept it to 1.

Garcia had much harder work vs Rayo.

No team dominates all the time, but good teams learn how to suffer well, and conceding high quality chances so often is a dance with the devil on a tight rope. Midblock, low block, second balls, winning your duels, pressing schemes/ triggers are all effective ways to not have the ball and still attempt to be defensively sound

We did exactly that. You must have seen some other game were Newcastle assaulted our goal and Garcia made 3-4 super saves. He had one tough situation and dealt with it great. The Barnes situation. That scuffed Gordon shot is another. 2 chances in 90 mins. That's low away to Newcastle.

Newcastle had 1.96xG in 10 men vs Liverpool by comparison.

What we had vs Newcastle was a good professional performance with our keeper bringing a valuable contribution, which is what you should expect from a keeper playing at one of the biggest clubs in the world. Not more, not less.

We didn't play a great game, 2 out of 3 strikers had an unproductive day. But what we played was still too good for Newcastle.

Man it’s part of our game, we won’t play this well and score this much if we don’t initiate the high press and high line. Our play style is high risk high reward and so far we reaped many rewards from it and I personally won’t have it any other way. Inter were the best defence last season and it wouldn’t prevent them from conceding 6 to us over 2 legs which was equal to all the goals they conceded up to the semi finals.

I acknowledge the benefits of it, however being this gung ho isn't sustainable. That is why I prefer a more conservative approach which would at least allow for defensive stability. I try not to be pessimistic but I'll hold this position until the end of the season, then I'll determine whether or not I still believe that a change would be necessary.

Obviously most of us were first introduced to his approach to football with Bayern but I don't recall an emotional coach rather a stoic & reserved one. You do have the sense of someone very committed to the club
I loved how he thrusted his head as he himself wanted to score on Rashfords header. I know many coaches do similar thing, but this guys really seems in love with club and players, because they fit his football philosophy so well. He's like kid in free for all candy store.

I doubt we’ll score many goals if we try to be more defensively stable
