The greatest striker of all time imo. Numbers/trophies aside, your greatest legacy is how you're remembered by fellow colleagues/coaches and the influence you have on future generations. Il Fenomeno is still talked about to this day, and he seems to be the first pick of most strikers who played after the 2000s when naming the best striker they've ever seen. Some of the best defenders of all time(Maldini, Nesta, Cannavaro) all said he was their toughest opponent aswell.
Despite playing only one season for Barca, he showed arguably his best football here and had one of the greatest peaks for a Barcelona striker. Won a Cup treble (Copa, Supercopa and European Cup Winners' Cup) and was close to winning La Liga aswell.

Driven out of Barcelona by his agents, shame he had to go but at least it paved way for Rivaldo to come to Barcelona.

Not a big deal in Italy. Serie A is the most incestuous league ever. Everyone plays for and manages every big club. You should look at the top Italian managers coaching every top Italian club recently. :lol:

I think it's because his club career was short and rather underwhelming in terms of accolades and he's more known as a Brazil player than a club player. The career ending injury got him a lot of sympathy too.

You think of him and you don't really associate him with any particular club. You associate him with the NT straight away.

When Milan and Juve play its a very friendly game. They even loaned Abbiati to Juve when Buffon was injured.

When Juve and Inter play its an unbridgeable divide.

Ronaldo is a what could have been player. Shame, considering he still is an all time great.
 
Van Basten lacks the PR because he didn't play for the Spanish giants (the media darlings)

He should be right up there in these conversations
 
OG Ronaldo left with record fee with Barca and it was seen as something Barca would normally do.
In his last 3 years in Inter, he played 24 games in total, he played more than that in each of his next 5 years.
It was normal he wanted to leave Inter and get back to Spain, and Barca was a mess back then.

Him not moving directly played a huge role tbh.

Selling 2 of the best 3 players in history ( R9 and Maradona ) in their PRIME. And letting the 3rd leave for free. :lol:

Maradona had many troubles in the club and the fight against the Bilbao players solidified his fate. Ronaldo was pushed out by his agents.

Maybe also because of his personality, he always had this joyful character like Ronaldinho and wasnt too arrogant. He loved the nightlife though.

A two times Ballon D'or winner(missing a third down to one vote), 2 times World Cup winner(being player of the tournament in one) is not a what if. Someone like Adriano or even Mutu is a good example. They were the best striker partnership in 2002, got to play for big clubs but couldnt keep that level due to circumstances in their lives(Adriano lost his father and became an alcoholic, Mutu got the taste of cocaine among others).

All this is true, but surely there should have been someone in the Sporting Department that said " No, this player is different, he is worth fighting for, we go the extra mile for him. ".

Like Napoli did with Don Diego. His behaviour there was far far worse and he was basically hanging out with The Mafia every weekend snorting coke. And we all know how that ended up. The best period in Napoli's history.

R9 was a question of money. He was desperate to stay, but we wouldn't give him what he wanted. We didn't think he was worth it. 🤣. A catastrophic error. Someone should have said pay him what he wants, HE IS WORTH IT, HE IS DIFFERENT.

Special Olympics Sporting Department doesn't get any mitigation in either case. To let those two monsters go is amongst the most ridiculously poor decisions in football history and without question led to us missing out on many European Cups.

We agreed on a deal but Ronaldo's agent went behind our backs and called Moratti after R9 had just signed the contract.
