I've been advocating that and the more I think about it, I think the chances of him and RDP going to the Olympics is higher.

Assuming that he does not retire at the end of this year.

He's still on contract with Inter Miami up until 2028. it will be perfect to hang his boot after the Olympics.

Portugal's path to their Euro's win:

Group: Island, Hungary, Austria -> 3 draws
Ro16: Croatia -> extra time
QF: Poland -> penalties
SF: mighty Wales

Their only decent opponent was Croatia before the final and that was barely won scoring in minute 118th. I'm sure the same people mention that path as well, when they talk about Portugal winning Euros :lol:

Clutchness aside, he was playing badly for 70 minutes, including a missed pk, but still had the desire and drive to ask for the ball and try to make something happen. What a player and captain.
 
Let's face it. Argentina haven't faced any strong opposition. The fact that they've struggled against the likes of Egypt and Cape Verde should have alam bells ringing in their camp.

He definitely completed at least 4 in last 20 minutes. First to set up Lautaro via that ridiculous run and another from short corner where he shows to cut in but goes to the right. Thats atleast 3 dribbles that comes to my mind. He had also won a foul after accelerating past the defender with a deceiving first touch some time earlier. These are off the top of my head.

Messi is undoubtedly the greatest of all time. However, I think that after the World Cup, this is the perfect moment for him to retire from the national team. One of the marks of true greatness is knowing when to walk away while you are still at the top, instead of ending up like Ronaldo,
who has been seriously damaging his legacy for quite some time now.
 
There is no such a thing like damaging your legacy. Folks will barely remember those years from Ronaldo a decade from now.

It is the nature of the beast to want more, it is up for the team to tell him your time is over.

I think Olympics and maybe Copa will be his last run, but I think he will skip any WC qualification

I don't think it's up for the team. Self awareness is something truly needed in this case. It's practically impossible for Scaloni or Martinez to stop calling someone like Messi or Ronaldo. Same goes for Modric in Croatian team. Those players became stronger brands than the entire NT so they are the one who need to call it a day. Competing in Olympics or next Copa would be truly unnecessary, selfish and stupid at 40+ years of age. If he want's to continue playing for Miami until the age of 50 that's his right but NT is something totally different.

Age shouldn't be a factor. It should be how well the player is on a physical, technical and mental level.

At 39, he's still the best player of the team.

Anyways, Messi knows himself when he shouldn't go.
