The way both Alvarez and his agent have handled this have been pathetic to be honest.
Lewandowski was going around making public statements about how he want to leave and how his Bayern career was over. Isak went public and spoke about broken promises with Newcastle.
Suarez went public about leaving Liverpool. Heck Cristiano said Man Utd was feeling like a jail when they were being difficult with granting him his Madrid move
I'm not saying he should stop training, but the only way to make something happen when a club is being difficult is by forcing it.
None of those situations you've described involved their club owners/directors coming out in the press and boldly claiming that their player will not be sold and will 100 percent stay, unless ( in this case ) the buyout clause is met.
That adds something of far more worth, to some people, than money to the equation, and that is ego.
Atleti said this from day dot, mind you. We've just decided to ignore them for reasons beyond my imagination.
Maybe Julian and his agent are smart enough to know that taking any further action is futile and just makes things worse for them when they have to inevitably stay.
Not withstanding that relying on players to go on strike is somewhat of an odious practice anyway.

Xtter is actually okay with such language currently. Can even intertwine jews into it. Would add flavor to mostly boring sport-jeet twitteroid space. Athletico would have no choice, but to agree for a discount.

If he went public and turned the fans against him then I doubt even Simeone would have let the situation stay as it is.
He probably would have told Gil Martin and Apollo who are the majority shareholders now that Alvarez needed to go, and Simeone's words holds a lot of weight in that club.
That's what I think would have happened anyway, but maybe Gil Martin's ego is too strong even then. Who knows I guess.
But that was his only shot. He had to force something to happen and they just haven't done that.

His only public statement so far was in the World Cup more than a month ago

If they abandon him, then they don't have to pay anything. But they lose a potential 150m transfer for free when his contract runs out . They bought Alvarez for 90m, and losing him for free
This at least puts some kind of pressure on Atletico. With this, also consider the fact practically all of Atletico except Gil Marin would let Julian leave for the right price. They would convince this 1 man not to lose out on 120-150m

Woltemade! Time for the Big German to dazzle us. Can't lie, he could be pretty great for us with that high level of technicality (probably the most technical big man in Europe), and an obvious big man solution too. And I'm pretty sure he'd cost less than what Newcastle paid for him. I'm kinda hoping he's Deco's plan B...and I could see Flick really like him too. The German connection strikes again!
