Watch the new WC 2010 about French NT documentary on Netflix. I remember they had troubles during the WC but holy shit...

France lost 1-2 to Ivory coast 🤣

France is incredible in offense with Mbappe, Olise, Coman, Doue and ofc Dembouz

but their midfield with Rabbit and Tchou is so crap

and defence is good but nothing special

Kante-Pogba to Rabiot-Tchou is such a downgrade

Kante was a unicorn and easily the best in the world in his role

Kante was special, but NT Pogba was something else. The combination of physical presence, playmaking and tempo control was unmatchable in this NT post 2006 WC.

True but Pogba needs someone to babysit him off the ball, defensively.

That was Kante who was like 2 players.

Kante gave Pogba the platform and freedom to express and unlock himself.

Then there was Matuidi putting in a shift as the defensive left midfielder/winger.

It’s remarkable for all of France’s success producing defenders & attackers that in the midfield there is a striking void of influential CAMs

Nah, Pogba defended well with NT too, it was contrast to his clib football in a weird way. Both players were still brilliant without each other (Pogba 2014 and Kante 2022) but obviously the team was dominant with both.

Cherki is there. They lack CDM/CM and their fullbacks aren't elite either.

They are kind off the polar opposite of Portugal, who are only good in midfield and fullbacks

Pogba is horrendous in terms of defensive positioning. He's decent at tackling and winning duels due to his physicality but a total disaster positionally.

That is precisely why he needs players like Kante, Matuidi, Vidal, Marchisio, etc around him to get the best out of him.

Not with France, though. You are correct with club level when he was relaxed.
But NT? Nah, he was absolutely a complete package. Kante didn't carry Pogba, he carried the lazy bums in attack.

Clearly illustrates no love lost between two but more interesting is how much ego there is in player to refuse to even engage on substitution much less receive the captain's arm band...from another captain

Of course, also a great advert for Les Bleus and what is often their chronic issue - arrogance & lack of unity

I really don't know why France didn't call up Kone and Thuram

I think at the moment both are way better than Tchouameni
