CL Quarter Final: Barca - Atletico 0-2

The 4-0 Imo, look we were bad but it was extremely exaggerated that they destroyed us. Proven by the fact, prior to today, we won them 3/4 times and only that fluke game was the only win they had. Today ofc a red card sabotaged us from winning as we were the better team when it was 11v11. Now I don’t want to excuse but the red card basically killed off the game for us today. Hopefully we do something honourable in the 2nd leg.

This AM may be subpar compared to a finished team full of top players like PSG. But come on... they are up there with Barcelona. Cubarsi got toasted by Giuliano twice in 4 days. Blitzed past him and gone he was. Until he scored or caused a yellow.

We can't even cope with players like Giuliano. We aren't really better than AM except when every single main player is fit. In any scenario except this ideal one, I might give AM an edge in a knockout tie.

We don't have many class players. There's 4-5. 2 out injured, Pedri who played like crap and looked off it, sluggish and slow whatever the reason, and this meant it was basically Lamine vs the entire defense of AM.

Add some brainfarts, and a moronic ref (btw, he is Romanian, I know very well how shite this guy is), and that's how you go out from CL.

It's better for us in a way, focus on sealing the league. Miracles do not really happen in CL. No team has ever won CL without huge investments in the squad. Not since Porto 20 years ago when football was very different.

We're trying to win CL with rejects, past it players, and teenagers with zero experience in these games. It takes a lot more than just 2-3 players and the rest filler.

Make an exercise. How many of our players would get into PSG and Bayern? Maybe 2. And even then there's not much between Kvara, Doue, Lamine and Raphinha, or Olise.

Impossible to compete with these elite sides with only 3 players. As it showed, even vs Inter and Atletico it's tough.

The same happened with Atletico in CL 10 years ago. We would easily win in La Liga, yet they would win in Champions League.

Why? Because La Liga has lower pressure. There is no sudden death. If you lose one game, you can still win a title.

Barca traditionally always have players of high technical quality but often of weak mental strength (lots of good boy choir boys) and today we have a clown Yamal Neymar Jr. as our leader.

So, for a team of technical and mental strength of Barca = it is way more likely to win in La Liga over 38 matches where the best overall techical quality usually wins.

In CL though, it is not only about pure technical quality but about mental strengh, fighting spirit, playing 120% etc.

And our team is traditionally weak in those areas. Poor Yamal probably celebrated the last win against AM and probably forgot that we play again against them.

At least we didn't win CDR title this year. 10 years ago we would invest all the energy and motivation in CDR, only to get dead tired in April and get knocked out of a CL every year.

We are technically awesome team. But quite naive, mentally weak and hot and cold in CL matches.

Barca vs Atletico in CL

2014: 1:1, 0:1
2016: 2:1, 0:2
2026: 0:2

1 win in 5 matches.
Not a coincidence.
It's a pattern.

Goal ratio: 3:7
** our only win in 2016 came after a red card to Atletico.

In 11 vs 11, we scored only 1 goal against them in these 5 CL matches.
Again, NOT a coincidence.
Mental strength vs choir boys.

That is exactly what Barca did this season yet again except they got knocked out from CdR after spending a ton of vital energy in the most crucial part of the season by trying to overturm a 4-0 deficit away loss vs. Atletico only to win 3-0 and lose 0-2 a few weeks later in CL instead doing the opposite.

This club never learns.

Some teams are good in the knockouts because they know how to out 2 games together correctly.

This is your RM and ATM type clubs in La Liga. Because it's a game of moments for them and they have the dirty type of players to make games difficult. Dirty isn't even bad usually. In the past we had real warrior types paired with the choir boys to get through hard games. Now I honestly cannot think of one player that can win a game with grit. Yeah we can say Gavi but not really.

The worst thing about it is that they manage to reach the final and then lose. After knocking us out, all the time.

I have to say, Idk why some how they only had 3 shots on target and scored 2 goals from them. We had more shots on target than they had shots on general yet they managed to score the goals and we did not. This genuinely describes us in Europe atp.

Raph is the player who raises on-field intensity for us, infecting others. He has that dawg in him. Others don't really, I agree (other than Gavi but his footballing ability is not enough currently to impact games positively).

Even Madrid didn't 'fluke' CLs with a defense of Cancelo-Martin-Cubarsi-Kounde.
Yes, we can debate and speculate about red cards. But truth is we have the worst starting defense out of all the big sides remaining in the competition.
Clowns like Trashford and Lewandowski in attack too.

100 % This and something I always said in the old forum. You're simply not winning CL with that back 4. Yet, there were still a few clowns who would reply "Well Barca never cared about defense", or "we play a high line, it doesn't matter".

Let's go back to each of the last 4 CL's Barca won (I was too young to remember 92). All of 2006, 2009, 2011, and 2015 had at least one of Puyol or Dani Alves. These two players are easily top 5 in history in their respective positions. Not to mention other very solid defenders/makeshift defenders in the finals like Abidal, Yaya Toure, and Mascherano who many would argue are top 10-15 historically.

If that's not enough, tell me if any of these players would easily walk in to PSG's, Bayern's, RM's Arsenal's, or heck even Inter Milan's line up who got knocked out? Maybe Kounde at Liverpool or RM, but that's it.

Typical. They got outplayed by 10 men, got infront of our goal twice and won 2-0.

We're like the Spanish NT prior to the 2008 - 2012 era. Always ruled the friendlies, qualifiers and group stage games with nice football then got knocked out in the R16 or quarter finals immediately every single time against whichever opponent.

Atletico, Chelsea, Inter vs. us always look like the classic German NTs. Shitty football but functional and gets results. Would never place a bet on us against these kind of teams in knockout games.

Only feel reinforced in opinion we got screwed by ref/var. Simeone didn't even control the ball but ok.
Koke though and that handball in box though. They can't defend it.

Entirely different match if taken into equation.

What the fuck are you talking about? He was one of the better players today
i lost patience with him. i cant endure an AM who after he receives the ball needs an eternity to make a pass. how many times he lost the ball or entangled himself in a meaningless duell?!

We keep talking about knockout moments and mentality and the sad truth is this game was lost due to abysmal referring and sheer bad luck.
The players tried to overcome it, especially yamal who smashed through their defense.
No yellows, no reds, no punishment for 90 minutes of dirty fouls, and then a red for a random contact.
then Julian goes and scores this fk.
I mean, you can't script it.

It's a shame about the red card, which obviously changed the entire match. We were playing very well, even though we wasted too many chances (Rashford🤬)

Anyway, I'm EXTREMELY PROUD of our boys, the team, and our manager! I really hope Flick stays for a long time and that he finally has the chance (the financial situation is what it is) to make a decent transfer market.
