I'm not sure about that. Whenever deals fall through reports seem to immediately attribute it to Flick, and some of them are contradictory to what he says in public.Well said. Fabrizio said that we didn't go for Romero because Flick didn't want it.
So if our CBs eventually end up costing us, it will be more Flick's fault. There is no doubt in this transfer window that he has huge power when it comes to transfers. If he told them get me Romero they would do it, he was also willing to come.
I would be cautious about those because the board has interest in using his popularity to deflect criticism. If they assign any transfer failure to him, they can escape it, knowing that he does not usually criticise leadership publicly.
However, if it is true that he told them we do not need a defender (I doubt it because any manager will take a big signing over nothing), then he should be overruled, that shouldn't be only his decision. Give him the defender and see how he works with them.
