23 - Jules Koundé

Came across the below highlights of our wins against Madrid in the 24/25 reason.

That season both he and balde had 1 goals and 1 assist vs Madrid.

Got me thinking flick system probably had the biggest physical impact on the FB and raphinha that season.

Now with hindsight it makes a bit of sense that all 3 drop a level last season. They were tapped out.

It’s not just Flick’s system it’s modern football. The best teams in Europe increasingly depend on elite full-backs who can defend, progress the ball, create chances and repeatedly cover huge distances.

That is one of the main reasons PSG have been so successful in recent years. Their full-backs give them width, athleticism and technical quality on both sides. When those players decline physically or lose form, the entire system suffers.
 
And a big part of why we aren't successful in Europe for years. Last time we had good fullbacks was in 2016.
 
With Cancelo coming, I was hoping he would bench Kounde. Cancelo would have been a hell of a combination with Yamal.

Alas.
 
This video is great example.

He is just not RB, and we need maximaze Yamals sucess here by getting him great players.

Kounde is less then avarage in every offensive aspect.

Getting just natural RB would do us big favour.

Pedro Porro would be really good choice.
 
I remain partial to the idea that if he goes back to 2024-2025 level Kounde is one of the best 5-6 fullbacks in the game. I have seen this Malo Gusto that was supposed to take his place in France NT. Nowhere near Kounde.
 
Him and Balde have to prove that last season was an off season, not their true level. If they continue to suck we need to target Pedro Porro, he's one of the few who are better.
 
Gusto even being in debate was a worry for Kounde as he is not great.

Better than Kounde going forward but even worse defensively.

Teams are tooling up on wide players and whoever is at full back for Barca needs to have a good season if going to beat the very top sides.
 
So then who? Bayern fullbacks are the weak spot in their team, Laimer is certainly not better than Kounde. If we're looking at names like Ryerson or something... that's not someone who you see as upgrade over Kounde.

Kerkez and Frimpong have been flops for Liverpool. Kounde is better than both. Hard to judge Arsenal fullbacks since they are so defensive everyone looks good if you barely open up. Market is bad at fullback. I like Pedro Porro, I like Hakimi obviously... but we can't get these.

Who did England play at fullbacks? Spence kid and crippled Reece James who is more injured than fit for years? Nah...

Who are better RBs than Kounde?

I said Porro when Barca signed Kounde and last summer.

If Kounde can be better than Eric or Cancelo that would be decent.

If can be better than Dumfries would be good also.

Dumfries is not even a fullback, he's a wingback in a 3-5-2. Clueless defensively. Would take a lot of hard work to turn into a fullback in a 4 at the back.
 
Ok lets hope Kounde is better than Dumfries next season.

Kounde is not great defensively himself.

If he can do that then its a start.

Be the best RB at Barca and in Spain minimum requirement.

Should be easy for him.

I was looking at some games from 2024-25 in this summer period. Kounde was class in 2024-25. My worry with him is that, even though I rate him as a footballer, I don't like his personality at all.

I had a similar problem with Pique. He could have dominated far more than he did, but he wasn't focused and serious enough about his profession.

Agreed, he had quite a few great matches in 24/25. Not sure why he dropped off so much.

Kounde had a lot of brain farts that season also.

To point can remember folk claiming he was tired and over played.

Def better than last seaosn though and had some top moments.

Like with Cubarsi, I'm willing to waive it off to the system and the pressure we play with at the back. Cubarsi has brainfarts too. Up to a point obviously.

I'm speaking about his 1 vs 1 defensive ability and his passing under pressure. These went to shite last year.

I was just watching the 4-0 Clasico. From 0-0 until 3-0, Kounde dispossessed or escorted out of trouble Mbappe and Vinicius 4 times with no help at all in 1 vs 1. He was simply faster and more intense.

Last season version seemed like he was on shrooms. Lethargic, no passion.
