I'd be delighted, if indeed theory of Rodri+Frenkie being some magical domineering mid connection as i never had any hate or shadenfraude against Dejong, just disappointment. Would be interesting experiment, definitely as both players have their own definite traits that could complement each other greatly. Problem with Frenkie is his mentality, though. Even out of form Pedri is more tenacious and works harder than him so it's not only about how good they gel with Rodri, but also who works harder. Flick is very aware and care of these traits. In some games Frenkie has done very well, but seems to be moody and inconsistent.
 
Even now people are dreaming that we will finally get to see the best of Frenkie, now that he will play alongside Rodri.

This De Jong delusion started when Koeman joined. And every since then, we've been looking for any crumb that would unlock the 'true' Frenkie Ping Pong.

It's never happening. There's nothing positive about the Rodri signing, for Frenk. It's the final nail in his Barca coffin.

Some people even dreamt they would drop Poster Boy Pedri for him. :lol:. They wouldn't do that even if it made sense to, and it doesn't even make sense to.

The truth is, Frenkie is all but done here and will probably play no more than 20 games for the club ever again.
 
Honestly Frenkie with Rodri sounds amazing. I assume this would eliminate the 4231 though or otherwise Pedri is playing the 10 or benched.
 
We should play with 6 mids and 0/1 forwards like Del Bosque did in 2010 given our current team, but it's Flickball so not a chance obv.
 
Good luck warming bench for Pedri and Rodri.

Good player but massively overpaid.

Also, really one dimensional, blind, can't pass forward or create assist but great at being press resistant.
 
We'll see. Him and Rodri might miss games here and there over the course of a season so it could go down to who is in better form.

We're gonna have to rotate the CMs and now we have 3 starters comfortable of doing that, sprinkled with unknown potential like Gavi and Bernal, and a DM option like Eric. Midfield depth is great.
 
How can anyone believe that the Dutch doctors told him he's all good to play no worries and then when barca doctors checked him they saw that he's actually seriously injured. That's like your teenage kid level of a lie, insulting to even try to bullshit like this.

Doesn't even matter if they told him this or not. He's not a teenie beginning his career, but a 29 year old professional with over a decade experience. If his knee hurts and needs to be bandaged in order for him to play, then he should know better not to risk it, especially with his recent injury history.
His first thought should always be Barca and second NT, because the club pays his salary.

How are you certain that he lied and was not lied to? It's not implausible that NT doctors would look out for the best interests of their NT, rather than what is best for the player long-term. RFEF played Yamal through discomfort using painkiller injections to ensure his participation during WC qualifiers last year. It is not unimaginable that the Dutch medical staff overlooked the severity of his injury to retain one of their more important players at the WC. If he was really lying, I'm sure there would already be some murmurs or even an announcement from the Dutch Federation denying his claims.

Now as fans you can be angry at his decision to continue playing despite the injury. But for players, WC was and remains the pinnacle of international football, something they aspire and dream of since their football infancy. There isn't a player in world football who would refuse to play the WC entirely if he knew he could still play through pain. You can hold that against him, but I understand the sentiment behind it.

Currently, while it may seem there is depth in midfield, but in reality all our MFs (Olmo, Pedri, Gavi, Rodri, FdJ, Bernal..).are injury-prone/fragile. The MF depth had really thinned out towards the business end of last season. So to be jubilating at the absence of one of our MF mainstay is rather strange. If Barca is to win big trophies we will need all our seasoned midfielders to be fit and in-form. Like it or not, FdJ may well be needed at some point next season, and that period could possibly end up being a crucial one. So for the sake of the team, I hope he recovers soon and remains available for much of the upcoming season.
 
It doesn't really matter who is right and who is wrong regarding his injury.

All in all availability matters a lot in club football. A trait that was very often overseen when it comes to Leo and CR. You can have all the class in the world: if you miss many games, you are not reliable for your team. Leo and CR live for the sport and did everything in their power off and on the pitch to stay healthy and available.

We all know that on his day Frenkie is very, very good and can be dominant in big games. However, over the span of his career at the club you can't deny the fact that he was missing many, many games. We shouldn't forget his price tag and the salary that comes with it over the years.

Was he really a success considering all of these things? In my opinion, no.
 
Bernal, Gavi, Pedri, Rodri. 4 players for 2 positions. That kid Espart looks very comfortable in midfield as well.

FDJ isn't really needed and can't be counted on anyway. Earns too much as well.

Not sure, we are so unlucky with injuries that i think Frenkie is still needed.

The medical history of Pedri and Olmo shows that they rarely miss a full season without injury.

Gavi is coming back from a very heavy recovery and cannot keep up with the matches 100%.

Hansi Flick use a football based on very intense and stifling pressing. To keep this pace for 90 minutes, we will need to change the midfiled often
 
God damnit it still gets me every time that he is 29!!!! Why does it seem like he should be 24?

Hopefully he can find some sort of form. Guessing that wont be until 2027 though.

In the end every player from that magical Ajax team was pretty meh and never really took that next step?
 
If this Rodri transfer is successful, ie a UCL & a some Semis. FDJ will have to play a crucial role in the team.

Bernal isnt going to magically start performing 5x what he is currently. 2 years of not playing cuz of injury during crucial years. He will take atleast a year or two.
Same with Gavi.
And Pedri is fragile will need rest.

If we are successful & FDJ does leave before 2030, people will look back at FDJ's tenure at Barca as pretty good, at the very least.

Already has 3 LaLiga, 2 Copa, a Semi in UCL. You add UCL, few more LalIgas and UCL semis, and thats a pretty good trophy cabinet for a player who came during the most tumultuous times of the club's modern history.

While not being the protagonist, he is still the solid core of the team. Hindsight will do good to him.
