In the interview he mentions that they detected an injury in his knee, but the doctors told him that he'd be able to play through it. After the World Cup, scans showed the injury had been more serious than previously believed. He also mentions that there is no need for surgery (direct conflict with the reports that the club is demanding he undergoes surgery).
To start with, there is always a risk when playing through an injury/knock. There is no minor injury that doesn't carry the risk of aggravation, otherwise it wouldn't be an injury.
What is closer to the truth is that perhaps they told him he was unlikely to suffer damage if he decided to play through it, but no doctor can say that the risk of aggravating recent damage is zero.

I also think this argument from Frenkie is reductive. The situation (with Romero) is probably more complicated than he is describing.
He is accusing Romero specifically of manufacturing lies, but what is probably more likely is he has been genuinely told this and is simply narrating what he has heard from people within the club (rightly or wrongly). And equally, the view on Frenkie from within the club might well be divided rather than all-good or all-bad.
Therefore it might just be two angles of the same situation. Romero need not be lying.
In my view it's not great for a player to engage in attacks on journalists unless they have concrete proof that they are inventing their reports, because otherwise it can look like an attempt to censor or suppress legitimate reporting.
There have been many, many journalists linked to the board/club who have run anti-Frenkie stories in recent weeks and also in years gone by so it seems far more likely to me that the origin of subsequent negative stories is within the board rather than Romero himself. It sets up a strange situation where the club are platforming his denial of Romero's stories which were also told to Romero by figures within the club.

I don't care for him one way or another anymore. Irrelevant player, who even when recovers and helps, is just not needed here anymore. Think meekness/softness of his character played a role of him never having great career.

Not necessarily he will get benched. I can see Flick putting him with Rodri and Pedri in midfield for a big game..
Maybe none of them taking a too advanced role. It's true that this is not usually how Flick plays but maybe we can see something new

Folks, don't be surprise he starts ahead of Pedri in the second half of the season. Rodri and Pedri don't always work as evident in spain run to euros and world cup glories recently.

Every now and then he has a great game where he is physically active and tough but then goes back to being soft and lazy. If he could always play like he played for example against Dortmund that one time he would be amazing but he 95% of the time doesn't.

His wages may be an obstacle for that, also, this season he'll turn 30.

It's a long season, so rotation is much needed and everybody will get their chances to play.
Actually, with the arrival of Rodri, I really believe it will give FDJ an extra push and motivate him even more. It’s the first time he’ll have real competition for his spot. One of the good headaches to have as a manager is having more than one quality player for the same position.

I think so too. Against some specific opponents, Rodri-FDJ might do crazy stuff.

As long as Pedri and Rodri remain fit, he'll be on the bench now. But this situation is only of his own making. Barca wouldn't have signed Rodri without his stupid injury now, that was totally avoidable. So, Frenkie played himself here. And since he's nearly 30 years old himself, I wouldn't be surprised if he looked for a team next summer, where he'd still be an undisputed starter.
I also expect the club will try to push him out again, as his salary is way too high for a depth player now.
