Lazy narratives people adopted because of his lower division background. Look at his performances. This guy is a great defender. Because of his LB origins he is also more than fast enough as a center back.

He completes 94/96 passes today and people are talking about him clearing the ball? 0 times dribbled past too.

“Ticking time bomb” that never went off after 2 seasons. So why should it now if he only keeps getting better?

I urge people instead to focus on his level of ball-playing and defensive actions.

His ball playing is good indeed. But we can get that with every La Masia CB. His defending is not good and he has too many moments of low concentration.

This today was not a great defensive performance. Perhaps he did good on the ball. But not great in defense.

And it is absolutely not true that he never went off in last 2 seasons. Honestly I have no idea what were you watching if seriously claim that. There are some obvious and well known instances. Others that go under the carpet because Martin is cut some slack by Barca fans.

Last game he made a mistake that created a goal opportunity for Elche by getting bullied off the ball by Elche RB. This game he completely missed the ball trying to clear it which also created an opportunity for Elche.

did you? He was our best defender in the first leg. Julian scores from a free kick. It’s true that he could have done better vs Sorloth but it’s difficult to play against a 2m tall striker in the box when a cross comes in. But it’s nothing like Araujo’s game-breaking mistakes, for instance.

Eric and Kounde shit the bed for Lookman’s tap-in in the return leg.

Martin is the new default scapegoat and it’s not fair.

Of course Sorloth’s height and build have got something to do with it. It’s much more difficult to deal with a 2m target man in the box than with a shorter player when a cross comes in. Taller players are usually stronger and can create time/space for themselves to connect to a cross using that strength and body frame.

Cubarsi has shat the bed way more often for us in key moments than Martini tbh. He's solid most of the time, but a bit stiff, which leads to occasional stumbles like this match. Koundes blunder was way worse as he obviously didn't even knew what was trying to do.

He's a revelation and we're lucky to have him. Yes, we need a prolific LCB there still but Gerard has been unreal

Yeah, and sometimes he just doesn't make clear contact with the ball, looks clumsy at times in a funny way if you're not a Barca fan. He panicks when pressured, that's where the problems come from. Panic + not great technique can do that.

My comment was on his performance in the Elche game specifically. I do in fact have complaints about his performance last night.
