16 - Rodri

There is no way the club is paying 70M base deal.
Rodri is 30, he will get 4 years contract not 6, this figures will put a lot of strain in our ffp margin in the future. The club has every right to take their time and negotiate the lowest possible deal or even walk away if City insist on those figures. The club to club negotiation was less than a week.
Of course there is a way. Bayern paid 100m for a 30 year old striker Kane, where speed is even more important. Rodri may be 30, but the WC showed he's still the best DM in the world in form. It's a miracle in itself that we managed to hijack this transfer from Madrid, because he aimed only for Madrid the last 2 years.

Further, the inflation of the football market made another jump this window, looking what kind of bums generate insane fees. This summer's 80m are not last summer's 80m. If you want a player from the PL club, you need to add their inflation, as disgusting as it is.

Also we have a big need after Frenkie's long term injury of a worldclass DM to keep dominating the midfield. Rodri is literally the perfect puzzle piece and for that, you're willing to pay a sum that even hurts.

And last but not least, the club is getting nearer and nearer to the completion of the Camp Nou, that will start to shit money once all tiers and VIP rings start to operate.

Stopping this transfer because of additional 10-15m € would be insane and self-harming.

City also know that we publically released that we beat Madrid to Rodri signing. So we are pretty much at their mercy to pay what they want, otherwise if the deal fails we will come out looking weak.

Still, I think the negotiations are going well and it is more about Bouaddi fee getting done at the same time, and Lille not suddenly asking another 20/30m. Especially when you got Uncle Flo with a hard on for him but unable to pay until next Summer as they are at their FFP limit without big sales.

Frenkie is under contract until 2029 and has a family settled there. He ain't leaving while he is under contract. Putting massive ffp strain in same position and treating it as just 10-15M isn't how we should operate.

The club needs to be smart with transfers and try to save every possible margin.

The financial worries won't disappear with full Camp Nou, the debt will still kill ton of our FFP.

Kane is a striker, those ones last longer than CDM, and are far more valuable. And Kane didn't have ACL and back surgery. A 100M for Kane isn't an argument for 70 or 80M for Rodri at all.

You came with the age argument, I refuted it by showing you clubs are even willing to pay 100m, if they think the 30 year old is a missing puzzle piece.

So we should just ignore that Frenkie isn't available most of the time? What good does having a player in the same position (which is not true) bring us if he's never playing? We need a top replacement for him even if we still have to pay him, what matters is who is on the pitch, not in the books. In the moment when we need a player like that we are lucky enough that the best DM itw is available, fits us perfectly and wants to come to us, it's really a no brainer.

I dont get why we shluld pay over 60 mil. Torres goes to psg for 55 with one year on his contract.
Rodri has 1 year, wants to leave and is 30 with the big injury.
Saudi oil money fc shouldnt expect to make bank on this.

By reports the Deco wanted a rotational option (Ounahi as an opportunity) while Flick wanted a starter. Obviously doesn't think Bernal is ready nor Casado is at the level.

Club went with supporting Flick.

So it's a completely sporting decision and not financial.

I guess we will try to sell Frenkie next summer. Or if we were ruthless, fund Rodri transfer fee with Bernal and Casado. But then Flick doesn't rate Tommy but he likes Farinos. And there's still Gavi.

So it may strain the salary cap short term but medium term there are outs to free up space.

Because one is a bum with Flick inflated stats and the other a 2 times Ballon d'or candidate. What a comparison.

Coz LE is buying Ferran to keep his daughter happy.

So? He just scored the winning wc goal, is younger in a football world where strikers are scarce.
It doesnt change the point that if we pay more than 60 for Rodri in this situation that we are overpaying.

I don't agree at all, that goal doesn't change anything except going to his head. He's still the same mediocre player he always was. There is no comparison at all, totally different players in position, age, level and everything.

Rodri for 70-80 mil isn't overpaying in this market.

Modric was 30 in 2015. He also missed entire 14/15 season with harmstring then knee injuries. He won the CL 5 times from 2016 onwards. Would € 70M for him been a waste in 2015?

I would expect 4 seasons at the highest level until he's 34 and another 2 or 3 seasons where he has declined but still remains world class. The fact that we got depth in midfield and don't necessarily need him in every single La Liga game should help his longevity.

I would also expect to recoup some money by selling Frenkie next summer. I doubt we'll see much of him unless everyone gets injured and there is no alternative.

Just get it done already.

Just watched one of his interviews a few days ago and he talked about his situation when he left Villarreal and Atletico. He said it's very important that you choose a club that has the position you play in available. He specifically said it made no sense for him as a young talent to go to Barcelona who had prime Busquets there at the time. Smart man. I also think he would be half the player he is without Pep's guidance.

.that's the same logic barto used to not sign any replacements literally the same logic.
It doesn't work like that. You make the offer and take it from there. When he went to City he had established starter in front of him.

Pep is great and all but rodri would be Rodri regardless.

The deal needs to be done today or tomorrow because I don't think Barça wants Rodri in a training session with City because anything can happen there in terms of getting injured.

This probably benefits City in the negotiations and will get the price close to €80M indeed.

It's ok that the club is not rushing anywhere and wants to get the best price, but if the situation gets uncomfortable just pay the extra €10M and call it a day.

If Rodri stays fit we will not regret even €100M for him.

Does he even train normally with his back injury? I believe it wasn't anything serious but I don't think he is able to fully train with the group yet.

We are right to negociate. Rodri is not a slam dunk by default. Pay 10m bonus for winning the CL or that sort of stuff, but if City want to reach 80m easily, this is a problem.

Paying 80m in some extremely successful scenario is not a problem. But them getting 80m if Rodri doesn't help us achieve something more, which is exclusively CL crown for this core, nah, not good.

80 million for a 30-year-old player with a torn ACL who’s in the final year of his contract would be the definition of a horrible and irresponsible negotiation. Anything above $60 million is absolutely crazy. In this case, Barcelona definitely has the stronger negotiating position, but Deco simply doesn't know how to use it. Furthermore, Rodri only wants Barca, so what can City do? Keep him and lose him next season for ZERO? No way they are THAT stupid. At 50 mil Rodri is market opportunity. However at 80 mil he is a HUGE and unnecessary gamble.
