11 - Raphinha

Next season

.....................Joan Garcia
Kounde......Cubarsi.......Senesi....Cancelo
.............Gavi..........de jong.....pedri
...Lamine...........Ferran..........Raphinha

Subs: Balde, Fermin, Olmo, Eric, Espart, Roony,

Not nearly good enough. Be serious. Senesi? A 29y old guy from Bounremouth? No sub for the wing? Ferran as our main striker? The fuck is this?

Yes and he's to blame for it. Nearly 30 years old and knowledge of his own body, he takes a fucking friendly game for Brazil serious, while his club is in the hot phase of the season.
This point is overlooked too much in my opinion. He should have known better and for me, it's on the same level of idiocy as Cubarsi's red. We're cursed with stupid players, who cost us CL runs.

Yo the background of the injury makes it even worse, a friendly game killed us the cl tie, Yamal is terrific but he alone isnt enough to win the big ties

yeah without the red card we never looses at home vs Atletico, vs Newcastle we scored 7 at home, should have scored less there and more vs the Rojiblancos

I know his body very well. ITs about to break down very soon and we need to cash in ASAP.

We need him back before el Clasico.

Given what Tebas said, the recent Yamal injury, the fact we have 4 of the remaining 6 matches away from home, and one of the two home matches is El Clasico, and Madrid have nothing to lose, I get the distinct feeling that this final stretch of the season will be a difficult one.

Don't be surprised if we win by the skin of our nuts.

If rumors are true and Saudis are ready to pay close to 100m for Rapha, I'd seriously consider it. His biggest strength, his legs, will start to decline fastest with 30+ and he gets 30 this winter. Speed and stamina both. Also his game is physically very demanding and the muscle injuries this season should be a concern with the risk, they won't get better with age.
On the other hand, you can do something with 100m, if invested in a smart way and not blown into the wind for an overprized Alvarez.

I'm His biggest fan boy here, but I've seen saying that since last summer.

It would just be too good of a business opportunity to pass up and is doesn't seem the type to hold on for dare life when we want him to leave like one & two others in the squad.

Buuuut the issue becomes who do we replace him with.

Nico is off the board. Fuck nico. But he would cook under flick.
Barcola
Diomande is probably the best pick from a off the ball work prospective.

In Xavi's interview before the election about Laporta, they asked him about the rumours that he had given the board a list of 10 players who he wanted out.

He said it's not true, and that he had only agreed the sale of one player to free up room for important signings, and that it had been agreed in collaboration with the board. And he didn't want to say who it was.

The player in question would have generated a significant fee, was willing to leave, and was an important player.

Given what Raphinha said about Xavi last year, and that he was close to leaving the club, I think he is the player who was being referred to.

In this case, the board have already approved his sale in the past. And like @Khaled_a_d posted yesterday there are rumours that there is a very big sale on the table.

All factors considered it seems like it's probably him. He is 29 and this is the prime time for him to get a huge deal in Saudi or America or where he wants to go to next, and its also still possible to command a huge fee for him. And more importantly, he previously had interest in leaving.

Even though he is very professional it doesn't seem like he is too bothered about chasing the CL or more accomplishments as a player. This might have been what he was working towards, and rumours never come out for no reason. As is said in Spanish, when the river sounds, its because there is water. They wouldn't be making approaches if they didn't think there was interest from the player.

They were also strong rumors about him going to Saudi in the past, I think in Xavi's last season? I think he later said he was willing to leave so that tells a lot about him and his ambition, he was never the smartest player and he didn't earn in his career as much as many worse players did so I think he would accept the offer if they offered him a huge wage.

It makes some sense for the club also if the fee is 100+ but firsty I doubt that it will be so high and secondly I'm afraid we won't replace him with a proper player. There is no indication we'll be in 1:1 this transfer window so how much of the fee would we even be capable to spend?

Replacing him will open a big question tactically.

Because Raphinha is more of an off the ball winger. So will they replace him with someone similar, who is more movement based and runs in behind, or a ball to feet winger who can 1v1 the fullback and stretch the game as a ball handler, similar to Yamal and Dembele of the past.

Having the imbalance on both wings where on one we have a ball carrier and dribbling threat in Yamal and on the other we have a winger attacking the space in behind has actually worked really well, especially in Flick's first season. The matchups Yamal can create with his threat allowed Raphinha to attack in behind and finish off chances.

But in PSG's model, they have ball carriers on both wings and up front in Dembele, Kvara and Doue which allows them to consistently create numerical superiority in attacking situations, since their forwards are so good at drawing players out of position with their dribbling. However they don't have a forward who is as strong off the ball so they often score very individual goals, cutting and shooting etc, they don't attack off the ball as much.

Nico and Barcola would be an example of wingers who are more ball to feet. Nico is mixed type but he generally does his best work when he can take on players. Similar for Barcola. So we would have two takeon threats wide and ideally we would have a player that can attack the centre of the pitch and take advantage of the space they create. More similar to Raphinha are players like Lookman and Rashford (but Rashford's intensity is nowhere close which makes him a bad fulltime replacement). Its hard to find a like for like so we might have to opt for someone with a different style although names are limited. A good idea could be, if he leaves, to sign one proven forward and one young/developmental player who might pay off like Godts (need to look closer at him as haven't watched him before). Yildiz would be a good option but Juventus will probably not sell below 90 million or so.

It also occurs to me that the news that the club is looking for a new winger would also make sense in light of this news, although the names proposed like Abde, Rashford and Virgili don't rise to the level of replacing him.
