Robert Lewandowski is my nephew but in my opinion the ever best polish player was my uncle - Zibi - Zbigniew Boniek - Bello de Notte - in Juve then in AS Roma.

Once asked who he liked better Messi or Ronaldo...he said Diego Maradona. :lol:

Interesting anegdote from his Seria A career;
When they played against Napoli and Maradona was impossible to stop, making them all look like children...during the half time, they decided to have him "neutralized", which meant beating the guy up with fouls so he stops fucking around with them. Well...after the half time, before they did anything, Diego's play was even better, magical, out of this world...and those who were commissioned with the shameless task said to each other...we can't harm this guy, he is that good and too good to watch. Let's leave him alone...Nobody dared to touch him.

according to the youngsters though he wouldn't cope in today's football as it would be too fast for him.
You right about that.
Damn...back in those days, red cards were given only when you almost broke someone's leg.
It is amazing he was able dribble the whole pitch length.
And according to some players from back then, a youngster fooling an older player with dribbles, Neymar style, making them look like clowns, was not appreciated. Diego was brutalized in Espana 82 and he snapped against Brazil. Later, I guess, his genius was acknowledged, appreciated and he wasn't getting on his opponents nerves. He was that good.
I have no doubts he was more influential with his play than Messi even though the latter was good at it too but Maradona was more cunning with a positive meaning of the word...harder to bring down too.

Yeah I mean young kids in 2026 who weren't alive when he was about and playing watch videos and say he wouldn't last 10 minutes in modern football - that's a laughable claim as he'd be the best player in the world if he was 26 now and more professional. Nobody would get near him. That claim is cut from the same cloth as the kids who say Pele would struggle to get on the bench at 2026 Norwich :lol:

Maradona's dribbling - like Messi's - is alien tier. He was more fancy, more of an old-school dribbler, more extravagant with tricks and feints and more often slightly bigger touches. Messi is very economical, has a simple but amazing style, and relies mostly on drops of shoulder, body feints, quick reactions (same as Maradona) and the ball being glued to his left peg. They're both beautiful to watch and it depends what you're in the mood for.

I think Messi and Mara are about equal in influence, playmaking and ability. I understand Messi is much more widely seen as the GOAT, and others like yourself prefer Maradona, but I am sitting on the fence lol. Messi is a far better goalscorer but might be due to the demands and way the era is now. They're about equal with vision and passing - yes, Diego's vision and passing were THAT good.

Talking about the brutality he faced, especially in the early 80s when still a young player - Look up when he knocked someone out cold in the big fight with Athletic Club. Here it is here

Not able to last 10 minutes!?! That's rediculous!
Back then the entire team had to run back and forth. Often with one on one markings.
Everyone was running back to defend too.
Look at their physique...they looked like an endurance sport athletes.
Too bad they did not have those sensors to measure what distance each player had to cover per match.
Maybe the game was less physical in terms of individual skirmishes inside the penalty box while they were executing free kicks or corners but overall endurance was a must. Hardly any player was still capable to play effectively after they turned 30...32-35 was too old.
