The defense needs strengthening this winter. No doubt. Madrid would crush us playing like this and they are not good, but it would fit their strategy perfectly.

Shambolic defending. Villa should have won this one, but Garcia the goalkeeper is amazing.

Hansi Flick:
"Barça's recent form? I think the most important thing was that we achieved stability in defense, and I think we did that very well."

"We also worked on this aspect in the training sessions, and we prepared a lot of video clips, and we introduced the players to what we need to improve."

What the fuck is this guy talking about? He says this after the game today, where his entire defense played at a 6th division level. Delusional.

Apart from individual mistakes (or lack of pace), i think defense is better recently. Seems to have stopped relying on offside trap so much and defend more compact.

Horrible defending that will definitely cost us the CL and maybe the LL too if RM gets a new coach.
You can't win the UCL right now with what we have. It's just the way it is.

Fix 3 of the back line and suddenly this team becomes unstoppable. That takes money. We have no money. By the time we do have money we have to spend money on ST and LW so the defense gets neglected more in the hopes Balde/Cubarsi/insert academy player can develop into world class.

The way some speak of Inigo you'd think we lost prime Puyol. Guy was poor last season towards the end and no stranger to costly blunders. We need far higher quality than 34 year old Inigo if we want to achieve great things. Spend money on defenders ffs and land some good ones.

We lost a bit by him leaving, but not as much as it's made out. Defense was shite last season and it is shite now. Issue is that, for us to play the football of Flick, we need defenders of a higher quality. In quite a few big games our entire backline was assembled for a minuscule budget. Defense has clearly been an aftertought in the context of our limited finances, and this has to stop going forward.

It is a bad defense because we did not invest much in it. Compared to midfield and attack. I understand this logic, but we have hit a roadblock that we can only overcome if we sign better defenders. We started addressing defensive issues by getting a solid keeeper, that sets a good foundation. Need to continue this trend and land a CB and a versatile fullback. As soon as possible. And please don't cheapen out, targeting more rejects, older players, injury prone players, just on the basis of low cost. This is not going to improve us. We will have to pay 35-50m transfer fee for a top one. Or compete for solid free agents with a high wage. Either way, it will cost money to fix the defense. No other way around it.

Then we will see how the existing players will react when their shite performances earn them a warm seat on the bench. They are too stress free as it is, way too casual, not focused enough, as if they are some top players. When for a long time their usual level has been way off for Barca standards.

Inigo made offside trap so effective

It's called selective memory. People only remember the highlights of the past or what they want to remember. It often happens with the human mind, when remembering things. Many just remember we won the domestic treble, were 2 minutes away from the CL final and Mbappe was 10 times offside in the clasico, so Inigo must have been prime Puyol.

I know this feeling perfectly well, for example remembering how much fun I had with certain computer games in the past and when I replay them, I start to remember the bad things and why I stopped playing them. It's the same logic, it's called selective memory. Many players from Pep's time at Barca were overrated when remembering for the exact same reason, only because the time was so successful thanks to a young Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets.

If we miss Inigo this much we are still blind to the issue. We still chase big money signings of attackers while the defense is in a state or shite. The attack is set more or less. Where we need an injection of quality is on the defensive end. Should be clear to anyone in the club by now.

Lamine, Pedri, Raphinha could have the game of their lives in a CL duel vs a top side and it will still lead to a defeat due to blunders at the back.
