Thierry Henry

"I believe Thierry was on the same level as Pele and Maradona, definitely. He was an exceptional football player, but as well a combination of a modern player, huge physical talent, technical talent, but as well special intelligence. He was one of the greatest players I've ever seen," his former coach

Ok

oh nm then
Lol

Tbh you are a good guy but I just cannot buy Henry being a top 20 player of all time. Maybe it's because I have watched/read a lot about the history of the game, and was watching his peers at his peak, but he never seemed anywhere near that level.

That's obviously bias from Wenger. I mean on the same level as Pele and Maradona is absolutely insane. Is this how ridiculous this convo is getting? Legit claims that Henry was on the same level as two of the best three players of all time?

No different to Martin O Neill talking up Ashley Young or Alex Ferguson saying Ronaldo is better than Messi - obviously their coaches and people they work with are very very biased.

Wenger knows game

Always rated Messi over Ronaldo when everyone else was leaning Ronaldo

He does (although he was a disaster in his later Arsenal years), but he's obviously biased cos Henry played for him. Either way, Henry being on the same level as Pele and Maradona is a braindead comment, even if Einstein said it. It's extremely disrespectful to Maradona and Pele. It's like saying that some very good director is on Kubrick, Kurosawa or Bergman's level. It's just a ridiculously insane comment that doesn't even need to be disproved for how ridiculous it is.

I don't think you actually realise the levels between brilliance. Henry was a fantastic players but there's levels even between fantastic. Obviously he couldn't come close to Maradona and Maradona's talent and vastly superior big-game performances back that up - despite Wenger's silly comments.

As for Messi, I never rated Ronaldo anywhere near him. I haven't liked Ronaldo as a player since 2005 and to me he represents all that is wrong with the game (rating players by their 'stats' and 'longevity' rather than their ability).

Anyway no hard feelings mate. I respect your opinion and you tried to back it up. Just feel comments like top 20 ever and on Pele and Maradona's level are mental.

You rate Batistuta (fantastic striker btw) over Henry? @Maradona37
Maybe it's nostalgia for the time, but I really did think Batistuta was devastating.

Even if you remove him, though, when guys like Romario and Van Basten are about, I think it's fair to say those two and others I named could/would be above Henry.

Anyway not bothered much - Henry was a fantastic, exceptional player, and I don't wanna demean him. Just think comments like top 20 player ever are over the top. Peace.

You know what the modern gen will say to the recent comments here.

'Everything gets better over time, footballers now are way better than in the 80s, 90s and 00s'. An extremely naive statement, as football isn't like athletics and just about measurable speed or height or power over time. No, in football, a technical genius can be born in the 40s and a donkey can be born in the 00s. Bolt is undoubtedly faster than Jesse Owens, but Mbappe isn't undoubtedly better at football than Pele (quite the opposite). Touch and vision and football intelligence aren't linear things that automatically improve over time and with better sports science and better medicine - unlike speed and power which are athletic and not about genius.

Take into account that the game is much more about athleticism now, and that the sport will naturally attract more athletic but less talented actual FOOTBALLERS, and that Gen Z statement looks clueless.
