Ronaldo has not had a season even close to average in years though. Neither has Messi but games or run of games both go under microscope.
Ronaldo was quite average for the big part of the last season even though he had better squad around than Messi. What saved him was literally a last run.
Seasons before he wasn't the main man for their success. Ramos, Modric and Marcelo were more significant, but it's always enough for Ronaldo to score just about any goal, no matter how insignificant to describe him as best in the world, because after all, every goal Ronaldo scores is a "Ronaldo goal".
Just the very previous season, did you know that his only meaningful contribution to Real until the meaningless Club World Cup started was scoring a goal to get draw against Dortmund in the CL group stage and a hat trick against Atletico? He was the definition of being bang-on average till November in 2016. And then again he was plain average till March in 2017!
