There is always a chance to renew.And it is always smart for a successful barca coach not to commit for long term to put pressure on the board .Pep has forced Txiki to sign both Ibra & chygrynskiy in 2009 when he delayed his contract renewal.Villa was Txiki favorite not Ibra btw
Also ,Rijkaard had huge success here .He has basically built this team from the scratch and helped them to be kings of Europe and made life easier for his successor but 2 trophyless years proved disastrous for his career .instead of being a coach in EPL or Calcio he found his best offer in Turkey
He need to keep his options open and know when to leave .Barca will never have its own Wenger or SAF and its one of the toughest coaching jobs with RM

While that is true, Wenger and SAF are very rare examples. Most other coaches stay at one club for a maximum of 4-5 years at a time.
