FC Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen will miss the rest of the season after it was revealed he requires surgery on a hamstring injury.

Vermaelen, who was signed from Arsenal in a deal worth around 15 mil. euros, has yet to feature for Barca this season.

"First team footballer Thomas Vermaelen will undergo surgery on his right thigh muscle by doctor Sakari Orava next Tuesday in Finland," a statement on Barcelona's official website read.

"The estimated recovery time is 4 to 6 months."

Following the retirement of club legend Carles Puyol at the end of last season, Barca brought in both Vermaelen and Jeremy Mathieu from Valencia as defensive cover.

This sums up zubi's work as a sporting director very well. A waste of time and money.

Do citizens of Barcelona actually care about football or not? Seems to me like most Catalans have a "DGAF" attitude when it comes to sports so they couldn't care less if their team gets screwed over by a bunch of crooks.

They took a punt on Vermaelen and at moment who knows how that will work out, but it was never a straight swap between Vermalen and Benatia.

We all know how it will work out for this season, he won't play. It would've been much better to save the money.
