They do have the best infrastructure and investing program.

For example our gold medalist in javelin had to borrow money to buy herself a spear.

I've always wondered, do americans actually get excited about national games in Basketball or (am.) football considering that there's basically just them and noone else on the scene? In some way its a team selection of the best players in the world, its like the footballing wet dream of having Messi and Ronaldo play in the same squad, yet have them clash against Shandong Luneng.

Just make it U23 for basketball like soccer.

Olympics for basketball is the most important international tournament like any sport except for football, tennis or boxing, football was always a secondary thing at the Olympics even before the first World Cup in 1930.

While U-23 Basketball will be something like Football U-14 equivalent, even so, football at the Olympics isn't justified except for the 2012 Tournament where 1.5m attended, its more like an extra thing among serious competitions.

Also, the NBA players weren't always present at the Olympics and USA won the gold with college teams.
Michael Jordan won it in 1984 just days after being drafted by the Bulls as he was still in NC College.

I am not really sure that Olympics is more important in team sports. While Americans always treated it as the stronger competetion I think many internationals cared more about the WC .Same for Handball too. Though all might depends on each country not just sports
Anyway,U-23 in the Olympics is already discussed by FIBA and I think it is just a matter of time b4 it happens. FIBA and federations of major sport will always want their own tournament to be the biggest one,to have the biggest stars.
Not the one that they will have to compete with all other sports for TV views.

Not sure? The gold medal is by far the most important title for them, World Cups are secondary and get minor attention compared virtually anywhere.

Football is just an exception while Rugby Union will be in the same category if it had a Olympic event. Football at the Olympics remains the most important for the women's event.

Basketball depends on NBA, as long as NBA players keep going its keeping the international stage alive, if not, it might as well die for good.

Who is them? Americans? sure. But I don't think it is the same for all international teams.Same for Handball. Many countries appreciate achievements in IHF world cup more
And FIBA is very powerful now,and for that U-23 Olympics is bound to happen. They will force Stars to play in the World Cup rather than the Olympics b/c they are growing too big to have the Olympics as their most important tournament
It will also work perfectly for the NBA who will now won't be forced to lose players (Americans/International) in the Olympics and WC. It will be just one of them now.
Again, just a matter of time. It was only delayed b/c they decided to change the WC format & Date 1st

Actually, if the gold medal is the problem, you may not realize it, but a hypothetical 23 age limit to the basketball tournament will destroy non-US teams that would be able to win even now with college teams and non-NBA players U23, so imagine seeing the ban on the others make em look like amateurs constantly losing by 50+.

So there are big chances this never gets implemented and we'll see the American Stars deliver in Tokyo 2020 and even later in 2024, possibly at the Staples Center.

This has nothing with the Gold medal actually ,just FIBA getting the best out of its own game. pure business
USA will win gold whether it is 1st team or an age limit group. We all know that

Danger Ahead
Cleveland seems to be very strong physically and mentally and they have very good squad depth while Durant can't seem to stay healthy, I think Cleveland will win it again.
