1-2 month episodes of form are normal with him. It's nice this season it came for a change as opposed to the 2 previous years where it was just a select few fixtures.

Absolutely not. He was invisible in the CL until semifinals in each of those seasons. I really don't get this weird dogma that he's some sort of constant presence in a certain competition or always plays in a certain way and it's on the others to do their job because Benzema is... He doesn't.
His issue indeed always was the number on his back, he was a mediocre finisher at best for most of his career. The argument "everyone is bad therefore we can't expect this guy to turn up more often than the others" is silly. 10 years of his career and was near always carried be his mates, much like Bale. Sure, he is decent at making those spaces, but a lot of the time this style is useless and merely concedes pressure onto wingers. Many games required him to do something different and instead he hid behind defenders and avoided responsibility. And this stuff goes for not only his work without the ball, but also shit touch. Gifs of his comical messups against PSG last year are all over the internet.

Eh, Benzema had multiple great performances before reaching those semi-finals. Even when he didn't had the goals to show for it.
For someone who's 2nd/3rd fiddle (depending on Bale's health), his conversion rate is solid despite avg. lesser shots than them.
Benzema has been one of RM's best players for majority of his years at the club regardless you personal feelings for him.
There's also comical messups from Sergio Ramos, CR7, Marcelo etc. on internet as well, guess they're shit players too?
