Default Australian Rules Football (aka AFL)

    Hello everyone,

I didn't see a thread on the most popular sport in Australia - AFL. I noticed that there are very few on these forums from Australia, however I'm just putting it out there to see if anyone knows about or is interested in this game. Having played both football and AFL at an amateur level I'd say football requires more skill/finesse and is more technical with fitness based on short and sharp burst runs wheras AFL is a very endurance based sport with a lot of physicality (and the skill level of more recent years has increased considerably). With AFL I know that the earliest a player could get up for the next game would be 5 days, although I believe you need 6/7 days to let your body recover from a game.

Anyone follow the Aussie game on these forums?

I do but not how I follow football. Doubt anyone here other than an Aussie would follow it either. Who do you support mate? I support Brisbane, not the ideal time either but eh. My 2nd team is Hawthorn cause of my dad. Judd is totally a shoe in for the brownlow too, magnificent player, I rate him over Ablett overall.

    Good to see another Melbournian!

    Nice to meet another Melburnian!

I know there is little international coverage of the game, but there is some nonetheless so I thought I'd put it out there and see how the response is. I'm in the same boat, where football is far and away my game with AFL a distant second. I'm a Western Bulldogs member - which means I haven't seen my side win a premiership for over 50 years! Haha imagine some Barca fans not seeing the Barca side win any silverware for 50 years - it's unheard of!! But such is the life of a Western Bulldogs supporter (highly thanks to Barca's recent fortunes, I don't even feel all that miserable when the Bulldogs fail anymore).

P.S. I do think Judd is a no contest for this years Brownlow, however Ablett did a lot better than I expected at Gold Coast, being able to rack up 30+ possessions in that side that got smashed every week. Personally I think they're the two best players in the comp, but I'd rate Buddy as the most valuable!

Haha hey a least the Bulldogs are better than the Lions, though our last flags weren't all that long ago hehe. I don't like Ablett(or Geelong now or when he was with em) much but I won't deny he's a gun and probably up there with Juddy as the best player in the league. Hoping Carlton beat the Eagles tonight though, I don't want either Collingwood or Geelong in the final but it'll be hard for them to not make it really. Glad to see Buddy made yesterday's game.

I prefer NRL to AFL tbh, but I do follow AFL decently but I'm no expert on it. Getting more into Rugby Union these days.

Well we all agree that football is #1. However for the life of me I cant seem to appreciate NRL/rugby in the same way that I do for AFL. And that's considering a guy that was in my year level in High School is currently playing for the Wallabies at the World Cup!

Gingerless you must be one of the very few South Australians who has no interest in AFL. I've known a few over my time and although the population is smaller than Melbourne, most seem to love their AFL!

Haha - Never been to Adelaide but I've heard there isn't much to do. Can't go past Melbourne for any city in Aus to live!
