    Default La Segunda 11/12

Interested in seeing a fight for a Spanish liga title? Then La Segunda is just the place for you!

Jornada 1 never took place due to the strike, so the season kicked of this weekend with Jornada 2. All the early favorites - Deportivo, Elche, Hércules, Valladolid and C***a V**o all took wins, with only newly demoted Almeria dropping points in a Andalus derby with Córdoba. Also Newly promoted Catalan side Sabadell opened with a win. And as already covered in their thread here, Barca B were beaten by Villarreal B in Mini Estadi 0-2.

Some would say this gol from Lucas at 65' for C***a V**o was the best of the action, if you like that sort of thing:

    Vigo No.

    All the scores -

    Jornada 2

    Gimnástic - Valladolid 0-3
    Barcelona B - Villarreal B 0-2
    Deportivo - Recreativo 1-0
    Hércules - Cartagena 2-0
    Guadalajara - Las Palmas 1-1
    Alcorcón - Xerez 0-1
    Sabadell - Huesca 2-1
    Alcoyano - Numancia 1-1
    Córdoba - Almería 1-1
    Murcia - Celta 1-3
    Girona - Elche 1-4

Yeah, because there is no competition between Barca and Real for the Primera title...absolutely none at all!!!

In that there are 6 teams likely to be there or there abouts for the title at the end of the season, with a close standard between all teams in the division.

Do you know anything about Depor's new coach? I don't really think it's fair to judge him based on last year's Almeria.

I don't know a great deal of him, but already he seems to have installed a bit of pride in the club again. Colotto - the scorer on the weekend, came out after the game and said while he respects Lotina, Oltra gives them a bit more passion for the shirt. Also he looks to try and play more positively, has Depor playing possession football rather that the sometimes dire 11 men behind the ball, play for a draw philosophy, of Lotina.

    BUT

He is essentially working under Valeron now though, which I don't know how I feel about. I love Valeron, but I have seen him in action on and off the field, great footballer and leader on the field. Massive party boy off it. Not sure that is who you want as a mentor. Either way it will be interesting.

To be fair on Valeron, he was essentially out for two seasons, so you can't blame him for finding ways to keep himself occupied. Guys like him are good at stepping up their maturity level when they need to. After all he's done for the club he's earned his chance to try and lead the club even as he ends his career.

It reminds me a lot of what River has done post-relegation, by hiring Almeyda they remind people what it means to bleed for the shirt. Granted Valeron isn't exactly firey like Almeyda, but he has sacrificed a lot for Depor, and was for SuperDepor what Pep was for the dream team, even if he wasn't a cantero.

Oh I agree, they had no better choice open to them, and for all he has done for the club, you have to give him a try. We will see where it gets them, I hope of course a swift return to Primera, but as good as it is to be all idealistic, playing this high tempo controlling game, is it practical? I mean Depor have a very thin squad, with known injury issues (Guardado already injured again) and not the youngest either. I would just fear that they will burn out very quickly and not get anywhere. In some ways I wonder if the pragmatic conservative style of Lotina would be more appropriate now in Segunda, while this more sophisticated set up of Oltra/Valeron might well have kept them in Primera to begin with.

Would be nice if Depor made a come-back in La Liga asap.

Another advantage of being in Segunda: Matches during the pointless international friendly break. And a huge one at that: First Derbi Gallego, Depor v Celta, in 4 years. From a Depor point of view its really important to win this, promotion ambitions are looking tough as its so close, and they are now in 9th, but Celta 3rd, are only 3 points better off. So a win today puts Depor right back in the play off spaces, that is how tightly promotion is being contested.

Two giants of the past went head to head today.

    Super Depor 2-1 Celta Vigo

No sadness for me, this match was better than anything you see in the Primera, a full stadium, loud fans, end to end football, only interrupted by flares being removed from the pitch, and a golazo to win it.

I'm not sure about what was the best part of that video... the first goal? the penalty? the awesome free kick? or the girl?
