Cheick Tioté

Cheik Ismael Tioté (born 21 June 1986) is an Ivorian footballer who plays for Newcastle United as a defensive midfielder.

Club career

Born in Yamoussoukro, he started out playing barefoot street football, not owning a pair of boots until he was 15.[1] In 2005, he was scouted by Belgian side Anderlecht. He made his debut for Anderlecht in a Belgian Cup match which they lost to Geel after Tioté missed his penalty kick. In the 2007–08 season he played on loan for Roda JC.[2] After that he moved to FC Twente, where he was part of the team which clinched the 2010 Eredivisie title.

Newcastle United

Tioté joined English Premier League side Newcastle United on 26 August 2010 after he was granted a work permit.[3] He made his debut on 18 September 2010 against Everton at Goodison Park. His debut was very successful – completing all of his 44 passes. He also made two interceptions, completed all three of his attempted tackles, and his only shot was on target.[4] He started all of the rest of the Magpies' games, putting in strong performances against Manchester City and in the 2-1 away win over West Ham.

On Saturday 5th February 2011 Cheick Tiote scored a 25 yard volley in the 87th minute against Arsenal F.C. to earn Newcastle a 4-4 draw in a game in which they had been 0-4 down.

Style of Play

Tiote is a tough tackling midfielder and his composure has been praised, along with his strength and ability to pass. He has often been compared to Ghanian midfielder Michael Essien and has drawn praise from Didier Drogba who Tiote has cited as his 'inspiration' to join an English club. Despite picking up 4 bookings in a row, Tiote has stated he will not change his aggressive playing style and hopes to emulate Essien. Tiote has firmly established himself as a favourite with the Newcastle fans and has impressed pundits with his skill. He was sent off although getting the ball for a tackle that was heavily criticised for its injury causing potential by commentator Mark Bright on 8 January 2011 in an FA Cup tie with Stevenage. Newcastle have since had their appeal against the sending off rejected.

He had yet another Man Of the Match performance against Arsenal. His goal was a sight to behold!

He truly is a fantastic Def. Midfielder! He's similar to Xavi in the way that he pivots and turns and hardly ever loses the ball! Newcastle will be lucky to hold on to him in the summer! :(

Haha, I bet this man became idol of thousands of Newcastle fans last night :) Amazing goal, and right time to score it! I hope he will continue to play good in the future, he seems like a solid DM.

Thanks!

He has played good the whole season, and has been Newcastle's most consistent player, shame he picks up quite a few yellows and suspensions. Even our captain said he's been our best player this season, despite the 11 goals of Carroll.

You should have seen his perfromance vs Everton 100% pass completion, West Ham, Wigan, Man City, Arsenal both home and away! Some of his best performances in a Newcastle shirt!

Tiote is a monster in midfield.

He is indeed! He is Beauty & the Beast, all wrapped in one! Power, Strength, Pace, Aggression, Athleticism, Tackling, Excellent Reading of the game, mixed with Skill, Technique, Vision, Fantastic Passing ability & ability it seems to keep possession for ever.

Funny thing is, though, that he wasn't even in FC Twente's starting eleven in the season they became champions. That's only last season, and now he's arguably one of the best defensive midfielders in the PL...

He just wasn't suited for the Dutch style of play, as he's not as technically gifted as, say, Theo Janssen, the player who made Tioté a benchwarmer, but it was always obvious he'd be decent in France or England, with all his power. And a cracking goal it was indeed!

Yeah, he didn't fit into McClaren's system more than anything. He still made lots of appearences from the bench to sure things up when defending a lead etc. McClaren himself though said after he left Twente the only player in his squad that could make it in England for sure was Tioté. He was spot on.

Chelsea want him, why not?! He's been fantastic.

According to our manager you can have him! Which is very depressing to hear as a Newcastle fan. Tiote is available, and you will probably get him in the summer if you make a good bid! :(

Our manager basically said we are a selling club, and will be for the next 3 years, at which point we should be able to hold off bids for our best players! Needs to be this way to sort out the clubs finances he claims!

Pardew is a Liar in my opinion! Newcastle should be due to make a profit this season even before we sold Carroll, now that we are back in the Premier League! Many Newcastle fans have done the simple maths, and we don't owe any banks money, so it is absolute Bullshish that we have to sell our best players for the next 3 years! He's also a Liar with regards to Andy Carroll transfer saga after everything he's been telling Newcastle fans since he arrive!

Our terrible Owner is more interested in making a profit on player sales than anything else!
