There's a lot wrong with that, because the Balon d'or is for the best player of the whole year, while the best player of the World Cup has already been awarded.

"Messi couldn't handle a tough defense"? What's next? You wanna tell me that the quality of the football played at a World Cup is higher than at club level? The only three teams that convinced defensively were Spain, Holland and Germany, while Germany actually only played one very good team - Spain - and lost with hardly creating any chances.

Messi played a good World Cup, considering that he had a moron as coach and a team without defense. Sneijder didn't play better. He only had the luck that some goalkeepers made a mess out of some poor freekicks and that his team didn't do much more than just defend and play for a 1-0 victory.

Wesley will probably win it. Inter looked its best whenever he was on the field and he scored a lot of key goals for them. Milito scored a lot of key goals too but Wesley had the biggest impact on the field. One of them will definately win it b/c their team won the treble.

However, Messi has the same impact on our team and scored 47 goals in 53 games and he's one person.

However I think the cup winning team will have the winner, unfortunately. The football world is an unfair one.

Right! Imagine what he could do having an average season. ;-)

Up until now, if you take the whole year 2010 into consideration, the winner's got to be Messi. As my dad said a couple of days ago: "I've been watching football for over 50 years, but this year's Messi is probably the best I've ever seen."

Remember guys: This price should not go to the most successful player or a player of the most successful team, it should go to the best player. And what Messi showed from January to May (and he seems to pick it up again now) was out of this world.
    Bingo.

There's already a prize for the player considered the best at the World Cup. It's called the Golden Ball. Similarly for the best player in the Champions League. However, if you're awarding an award for Player of the Year, then the clue is in the name, it has to be the best player in a given year. And if that is indeed the criteria, then there's only Messi that can be considered. Top scorer in the Spanish League, top scorer in the Champions League (2nd year in a row), and European Golden Boot winner. Those are just the stats. Anyone that's watched him this year will know that he's played at a completely different level to anyone else this year, it's not even close. Seriously, I don't even understand how he didn't win any of the Champions League awards recently, when he was clearly the best CL player last season

we're in danger of having one of the greatest individual seasons in the history of the sport going unrecognised, which is lunacy IMO. this is the whole point of individual awards in a team sport, they're supposed to go to whoever has been the best player, not who has been the best player on the team that has won the biggest competition

I know the above probably makes me come across as a Messi fanboy, but oh well...

Being shut down for 180 minutes in the CL semi final begs to differ or scoring zero in the WC
it's not just the individual stats otherwise Totti would have won it before or Suarez can land the second spot this year .. it's where your individual skill drive your team and /or national team to..
and in that important (yet turned a blind eye on by biased individuals ) Sneijder and Xavi carry a lot more weight than Messi who failed in the Champions league and the WC
all previous winners either won the CL or won the WC.. that's how it goes and Messi did nothing apart from winning the league
and it's not the greatest individual season .. that was 2 years ago..

It's not about the best player, it's about who had the best season from an individual perspective. Under that criteria there are only two candidates: Xavi and Sneijder.

So you're saying your team have to win everything for you to be considered the best player of the year?

Sorry Beast but on this occasion that is a ridiculous comment

Messi was the top scorer in the CL last season and scored 47 goals in total, and has been playing unbelievably consistently for years when fit.

It really is scary how good he is but I guess another reason why he may not win it is because everyone is used to him being so good that creating many chances and assists in the WC but not scoring is seen as a failure for him (Crap if you're SantaC)

Best player of the year is associated with your team achievement cause at the end it's a team sport .
and no you don't have to win EVERYTHING but you do have to win the major trophies in that year or go very far in it..and leagues doesn't hold much weight in this
so no it's not a ridiculous comment that's how it is from day .. the ridiculous thing is thinking goals are enough .. why didn't your king Larsson win than ? .. Messi won the golden shoes that's as far as goals will take u
so like u saw Ronaldo for WC 02, Dinho for CL 05 Cannavaro win it for WC 06 , Kaka for CL 07, CR for CL 08 , Messi for CL 09... do the math .. Messi is an outside bet cause goals don't count for anything if your team won no major trophy
there is other consistent performers last year as well they may not scored as much goal telly but they contributed to their team glory like Sneijder and Xavi..
Messi has no more than 10 % to win it this year IMO
