Ah, thanks for this thread; and the relevant link. Makes it a bit easier to understand the differences.

The top 4/3 teams of the best leagues get into the Champions League. These top 3 or 4 teams from the prominent leagues are the best teams in the world, but the teams which finish right behind them in different leagues all over Europe are pretty good sides as well. So there is a tournament for them (the Europa league) where they play teams from other leagues and its actually interesting as those sides are most likely to be evenly matched as far as quality of the teams are concerned. So even though the overall quality of Europa League is not like that of Champions League, the excitement is there. And there are some seasons when you would find very strong sides in the Europa League as well. For example, we have the likes of Juventus, Liverpool, Man City and the current champions Atletico Madrid participating in this year's Europa.

In fact the UEFA Cup used to be more hard to win than the European Cup....numerous teams from the top leagues participated in it....but only one team from those same top leagues played for the European Cup...even though the prestige was always greatest in the European Cup...

While the Champions League is played at a higher level, last year I found the Europa league games to be much more entertaining than the CL encounters. Compare the Europa league final (a dramatic extra time victory) to the CL final (an impressive but dull dominance); I thought that summarized the two competitions.
