Liverpool and Bayern turning into comical defenders 1-2-3 years after success. Meanwhile we have players who won everything at club and national level from 06-12 and we expected them to be hungry in 2020. I mean, it's a miracle Messi is this motivated...

Trust me , Opponents are starting to figure out high lines Possession Football.

On a serious note, why are teams no longer capable of defending?
You have all these top teams conceding a shit-ton, you used to have top teams regularly conceding 20 or less, these days? You`d be lucky to concede less than 30.

Top teams are far more open now relying on defenders to mark man to man rather than have a numerical advantage.

It normally works because their strikers have the firepower to win a shootout but days like this can happen especially if the motivation isn't high.

Yes, teams like to keep a high line and press hard. This leaves them open especially on bad days. Liverpool had Gomez and Adrian in goal so bad start there.
Also a team that constantly presses is bound to burn out after 2-3 seasons. It's only natural. The players are not machines.
Another problem is the lack of quality defenders. CBS nowadays are average and most full backs are basically converted wingers. This is why we are getting these scores.

In the post match comments one of the Villa players was talking about how they'd analysed Liverpool's high line and had been working on it all week. I think it's a combination of that, and Liverpool players seeing what has happened to City over the past couple of weeks, thinking they can just turn up and win because the league offers them no challengers.

Villarato!

Man is absolutely reeling from it.
All the more funny to watch how he has to go out there and pretend like it's under control.

Not sloppy at all Jurgen
