I thought we played like crap to be honest. We played like a 3 times more expensive Atletico clone with a great keeper and Messi on a good night.

On another night, Oblak wins the duel with Stegen and Messi is better blocked and it's 1-0 Atletico.

Atleti are a monstrous team and very difficult to play against (especially at their own ground) You have to take that into consideration. Their only weakness is scoring. Other than that they are easily one of the best in all of Europe.

This match was a perfect example of what needs to happen for us to win the CL.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Sustain immense pressure the first 20 minutes and get some luck with saves from Mats.

2. Balance the game because the opponent will get tired by running like kamikazee to score a goal so they can park the bus later.

3. Rely on Messi, Suarez and Griezmann, mostly the first one, to pull a rabbit out of their hats.

4. The goal must come late in the match so we can be able to defend it. More than 15 minutes of defending by Barca are unsustainable.

Now joking aside, this was a really tough match against a really motivated Atletico. Apart from the 20 first minutes we did ok.

Agree. Thought it was better than most away games we play.

Not a hope in hell we are winning the CL this year. That could could easily have ended 4-1 , we were destroyed many times and it was luck that saved us and the fact that Messi is the greatest. You take him out of this side and we are a mid table team.

Besides that have already been said...
I was suprised by Robertos game: solid defense and active role in offence.
Firpo giving away a bit too many balls.

Wish Atletico would bottle it against us in the CL the way they always do in the league

The story of the Spanish Big 3 in recent years:

a) Barca beat Atleti in the league and CdR.

b) Atleti beat Real Madrid in the league, CdR, SC & UESC.

c) Atleti beat Barca in the CL.

d) Real Madrid beat Atleti in the CL.

e) Barca beat Real Madrid in the league.

If we "don't have a hope in hell" to win the CL, then who does?

regarding "give the ball to messi"

I once saw a barca training when Messi was back after injury in September. The exercise was 2 teams, say 7vs7, but there was only one playmaker - player nr. 15, which was, you guessed it, Messi.
As possession change - they HAD to pass to Messi (if possible). So this tactical finesse is also trained. I wonder if this is also a standard training exercise in other teams.
