Lionel Messi - v7

.

Messi used to have a smaller area of action, while being more active inside that area. Under Valverde he went everywhere, big distances, at slow pace and intensity.

.

Messi was everywhere because he needed to drop deep and bring the ball in dangerous area. There was no tactics and no players to do that. Hopefully FDJ can do that and new coach will develop somebody else to do that to so Messi can stay more focused on 3rd part od field, to say attacking area.

Yes. Actually, there is a small difference between km ran under Pep, and km ran now. He runs reasonably close as he ran at his peak, but he is a lot more chaotic and unstructured in his game, and this is the main fault of the manager.

Messi used to have a smaller area of action, while being more active inside that area. Under Valverde he went everywhere, big distances, at slow pace and intensity.

What is needed now is a more active Messi, but at the same time a more spatially contained Messi. Trust the team and the system to find him in his area of action, while investing his energy into shorter and more often runs off the ball. You don't make Messi go everywhere in order to make something happen. You develop a system that can find Messi in more dangerous positions and ask Messi to help the midfielders perform their role, not go in their zone, and try to replace their role.
Really well said. Thats exactly what it is. Sadly I have not seen that Messi since Pep. Maybe for a short while with lucho when he stuck to the right side?

The Messidependencia started back then and to be honest he hasnt had a proper coach since.
Eventhough we all really enjoyed msn the tactics since Pep always been poor.

If Messi really is on board with Setien and is motivated, Setien's job gets easier instantly. There's something about having Messi in form that just makes things easier in attack. He and Setien need to work just a bit more on movement and position. He's got a manager who understands well this aspect of football. I think after Pep he is the best positional manager we've had in terms of tactics.

Really optimistic Messi will be on board and agree to stay upfront, where he'll finally enjoy plenty of service. If he's shown so much grit while playing that boring snore-fest, imagine the fun he'll have being part of an efficient, well-run system, maximizing his talents. He'll be like a kid in a candy store :D

If he still drops occasionally, I'm sure Setien will address it and work out a way he can do so while maintaining coherence and structure. As in, he drops and Grizz or another simultaneously move up to occupy the space. Big fan of this type of fluid interchange when well executed as it can confuse the opponents. Ajax does it a lot under 10H, so does PSG. Makes for a dynamic, fast tempo! uhm that is, when players are well drilled and don't bump into each other hehe

Good to see have some chances that he didn't have to create all by himself for once, although it's only Granada at home. He was a bit sloppy but got the match winner in the end.

More flow to the team without the fraud and without Suarez slowing everything done.

Good goal, but bit sluggish.

Hopefully he starts scoring more in the coming weeks.

Having a geriatric 35 year old Cristiano out-scoring him this season would be tragic.

It will be hard considering Ronaldo is facing far worse teams than we do while being a pure striker. Seems like he is being fed chances more than ever right now and it also helps that Dybala is back at his best again.
