Lionel Messi - v7

We were superior team last year to Europa League levels United and Lyon. We would've beaten those teams without Messi as well. Imo, last season we had a lot of luck with draws, and we would've won the CL by beating only 1 high quality team on our way to the title. Because of this it was a golden chance to win a CL in the Madrid style.

You could have a case if we were beating the likes of Juventus, and Bayern and fell to Liverpool, but we basically were knocked out by the first top side we've met in the knockouts.

The quarter final draw in particular was excellent. If we do our job vs Napoli and get a similar draw this year, we'll be within 2 games of the final again. People underestimate just how big of a role a great draw in the quarters can have. It opens everything up, since you get an easier opponent and a lot of the big teams get drawn together.

^ Why we need our midfielders to step up and why I ideally want an offensive minded midfielder who can help with this.

Messi is the offensive midfielder these days. When you play with a no10 that player becomes the playmaker. For this to work, you would need Messi to go back to being a winger. A position which he doesn't seem to want to play since 2015.

Guess you will stop complaining about Messi always dropping down deep now then?

Cannot have it both ways. Choose your narrative.

Unfortunately Xavi and Iniesta combo happened once and will never repeat again so decline was expected.

Think we did great in 2015 and 2016 though when Lucho focused on forwards.

Our problem is that our FBs and MF both are unable to create anything. It would be fine if we had World Class FBs that could do something on their own, but Alba is a one trick pony and Roberto & Semedo are what they are. Mostly average.

No. I don't like it when he drops. But it is what it is.

The reason he drops is because our midfield have been unable of advancing the ball to the final third. They'll rather pass it sideways or backwards than make a progressive pass or try a through ball.

Perhaps people ought to hold our players to a higher standard instead of jizzing themselves over someone evading pressure only to pass it sideways..

Yes, and this happens because our forwards are crap at moving. Their movement is very poor. As good as they are on the ball, they are as bad off it.

10-13 seasons were all better

When you look at Messi within the team, 2009-11 Messi is the best for me, closely followed by 14-15. Now he creates more statistically, but the freedom he has in terms of other duties is huge. During Guardiola, he had to do more in terms of tactics, pressing, positioning. Nobody counts that when judging 'the best Messi'. They look at goals and assist and chances created only.
