On club level he is by far the best of all time. Its not even close. People can discuss whether he is the overall GOAT as his international career is unfortunately not on GOAT-level. If he wins the Copa America and the WC 2022 by being one of the best men, the discussion is over.

The man played in the 60s,it's fair to say that he was as good as he could be for his time. People tend to say that Pele and Maradona played "in the old times",but the time between Pele's retirement from Santos and Maradona's first career game is not that much greater than the time between Maradona's retirement and Leo's first game.
I think that if he played in today's game,he would be close to Messi's level,but we'll never know.

In Pele time second best player (some oldies and romatics even say the best) was Garrincha and he was drunk form monday to friday. Sorry to Pele fans but football and sport in general changed dramatically. It is now on the edge of physical possibilities, probably even unhealthy.
