Luka Jović

Needs a proper system to thrive in which requires having players who can move and create stuff for him so he can bang it in.

He also needs to add much more than just being a poacher/target man in the box, he's basically useless if the rest of the team isn't mobile enough for him. Its sort of like Paco was for us when he came, just too static off the ball and not being involved as much as he should.

Honestly, have you guys watched any games he played in? Y'all sounding off with some next level takes without any context.

 • Celta Vigo (A), 9 minutes, 4-2-3 after Modrić red card - came on just after Lucas scored to make it 3-1, for Benzema as ST, hits the crossbar on the first header
 • Valladolid (H), 29 minutes, on for Isco at 0-0, Zidane switches to 4-4-2 as we need to try to score, Jović as RF, Benzema scores at 82 mins, we drop and Kroos blunder makes us concede to make it 1-1. Jović quiet overall.
 • Villarreal (A), 68 minutes, starts as ST in 4-4-2, plays OK, makes a LOVELY backheel flick to setup Carvajal for an assist to Bale, gets subbed off
 • Levante (H), 7 minutes, Real lead 3-0 at HT, concede 2 goals in 2nd half, Jović on for Benzema as ST as Zidane is trying to offset the mounting Levante comeback but team defends more than attacks anyway
 • PSG (A), 20 minutes, Real trailing 0-3 with no hope getting outplayed everywhere
 • Sevilla (A), unused sub, Real focusing on defending the 0-1 and counters
 • Osasuna (H), 90 minutes, 1 semi-sitter at full speed missed on his weak foot, 1 disallowed goal where he's offside by half a boot, very good game overall
 • Atletico (A), 3 minutes, on for Benzema, zero time to do anything, both sides settling for 0-0
 • Brugge (H), unused sub, mostly forced by Courtois horror show and Nacho coming off injured at half time leaving us with 1 sub for the entire 2nd half
 • Granada (H), unused sub, Kroos injury in 1st half, with Real 3-0 up Zidane opts for Isco (who knows why), then James as Granada pulled 2 back after Areola shocker
 • Mallorca (A), 66 minutes as RF/RW glued to the wing in the shittest, lopsided 4-4-2 I've ever seen, subbed off as we need to switch to 4-3-3 to get organised

TL;DR - Jović played 3 games out of 11 where he got more than half hour on the pitch. Only 2 as a striker. Setup a goal in one of them and got 'robbed' of one in the other.

That's the state of pressure and expectations at current Barca and Real:
1. Suarez and Benzema are not world class anymore
2. but if a new guy won't shine right away, he won't get too many chances.
The safer/proven option will continue to play.
And clubs will just move to a new target in the next summer with a hope that a new guy will perform right away. Or, they will move to a 3rd target in the next summer.
In the case of Jovic, he will probably get 1+1 season of chances.
After a first season he will have an imaginary "yellow card" under his name.
And unless if he explodes in the 2nd season, he is dead by a New Year of his 2nd season.

Again, this is what too high pressure and demand for trophies in every game is making from players like Malcom, Paco, Dembele, Jovic.
they are not bad, but a club doesn't have years and years to test whether they will eventually start to play awesome.

Alcacer situation is completely different. He came to be an insurance to a 28-year old Suarez, which was never going to work. In that situation what Barca should have had at their disposal is a local guy who'd score from the wing i.e. a Pedro, not someone who needs more time than hierarchy permits. It's the same reason why Morata left Madrid - because he didn't want to deal with that situation, particularly where he played less but had almost double the goals per minute over Benzema in 16/17.
Jović on the other hand is 21 and joins when Benzema is 32. He is not going to have a 'yellow card' over his name anytime soon. If he desires to leave, it's not because he's shit - it's because Benzema at 33 or 34 will continue to play FAR too much not letting him get any rhythm or chemistry. And that's something any forward-thinking Madrid manager should not in any circumstances allow to happen.

Benzema needs to start getting phased out ASAP. The 20-30 goals that El Flaco and that Lyon squireboy swoon over as if it's some incredible tally are not worth us stifling Jović progress. If by the start of 20/21 Jović doesn't start at least half of the games where both he and Karim are available, he will want a loan. Because nobody wants to deal with a situation where you have to pull a hattrick out of your ass to stay relevant in 30 mins every second or third week you manage to get minutes.
Jović is faster, has very good touch for a stocky guy and does not focus on dropping to the wing to ask wing backs for a pass every minute to remind everyone he is doing something useful. He's a scorer first and foremost. We need to capitalise, because attacking threat is what we lack most whenever we go up against a serious opponent. At the moment nobody gives a fuck Benzema is upfront unless Bale is on the pitch as well. All Benzema ever scores is a random header from one of the 1000 crosses or some ridiculous (to his credit I guess) turn that either happens super rarely, or it doesn't at all. We need to bank in on Luka to make teams worry and let our defenders breathe instead of having to be perfect every game for us to have ANY chance at getting points week in week out. He's the potential regular threat. Not the bearded fraud who regained a shred of prominence after 8 years of being content carrying Ronaldo's bags.

He's struggling to fit in, but boy is he absolutely massive. Jovic is probably bigger than most UFC fighters.

Guy's calves rival Shaqiri's.

If only he weren't so shitscared, he could bully anybody.

Very nervy, but quality is there. Good years ahead.

Half a season played and after being signed as a goal machine he's helped Madrid by scoring exactly 1 goal :gumbau:

Was just a stupid decision to join Madrid at this point.

Not really. He's a 21 year old who doesn't know any language bar his home one fluently. He will come around as long as he stays patient and makes steady progress on the pitch or off it, one is just as important as the other.

That language stuff is overrated. Right now he threw a year of game experience away. I wont say he has no chance to succeed anymore, but it would have been wiser to spent another year at Frankfurt (or go to a better club whos missing a cf).

But I get that young players take the chance when Madrid/Barca etc are calling, you can always miss the chance and another young forward takes it (for the next 10 years). Tough luck. Its a lot of chance and circumstances at top clubs - I still like Jovics profile a lot.

Overrated, lol. Go ahead, provide one analogy that it's overrated at this level across Europe. Young players from abroad who make it to big teams rarely make an immediate impact at this age without the language, and from an entirely different culture. In recent history, I can only remember Ozil that did it rather effortlessly. Sahin? Bounced. Who out of players with little experience, coming from central-eastern European culture, made it?

And even if you recognise that, the next argument is that he made the wrong choice. Uh, no? Odegaard is his age right now making the choice 3-4 years earlier. Regular play and adjusting to the league matters.

Jović problem is that Benzema is being treated as seemingly the only answer to satisfy RM short-term scoring needs. Which is bollocks. And as stupid as it sounds, Jović is our only main scoring alternative if afforded a time investment. He's our only chance at a 2nd scorer. And hence, winning the league without much of an issue.

Interview proves he has a class mentality.

When he finally scores, and if it happens in a big moment, he could explode. It's nothing but time and chemistry here.
