It’s fair to say that France’s top tier produces a number of top young stars in the making, some of whom go onto greatness while others fall short of expectations.

It’s always a playground packed with midfield talent, and that was certainly the case at Toulouse around the turn of the decade, with Etienne Capoue and Moussa Sissoko both graduating from the club’s academy. Both emerged with reputations as big as their statures and would go on to be capped for the French national team but, in truth, both fall into the category of having failed to live up to their promise.

Now there’s a new midfield colossus on the block at TFC, and Ibrahim Sangare will be hoping to emulate the initial success of his predecessors, but better build upon his lofty potential.

Having made his debut as an 18-year-old back in 2016, the Ivorian only really established himself as a first team regular midway through last season, going on to start 18 times in Ligue 1. He's continued that under Alain Casanova this season. His ball-winning ability was clear to see, averaging the most tackles per 90 minutes of players to start ten or more games (4.1) - a feat previously achieved by the likes of Mario Lemina, Idrissa Gueye and, of course, N’Golo Kante.

After four matches of the current season he’s already improved on that figure, currently averaging 4.5 per 90 minutes, with no player having made more tackles in total ahead of the international break (18). The efficiency of his challenges have seen a huge improvement to now too, dribbled past just once, resulting in an outstanding 94.7 per cent tackle success - up from 64.3 per cent last season.

It’s the progress in other aspects of his game that offers the most encouragement that Sangare could become the modern all round midfielder that is so in demand nowadays, with significant developments in his dribbling and passing thus far.

Only Allan Saint-Maximin (15) and Ferland Mendy (14) have completed more dribbles in Ligue 1 than the youngster at this early stage (13), and while he proved last season that he was able to use his power to breeze past opponents, again his efficiency is on the rise. Last season the midfielder completed 29 of 36 attempts - an impressive 80.6 per cent success - and this time around he’s been dispossessed on just three of 16 attempts - 81.3 per cent...

French football has a long history of creating multi-talented midfield players, from the likes of Michel Platini and Jean Tigana through to Patrick Viera and Zinedine Zidane we have seen the country produce players who patrolled the middle of the park with a mix of dogged tenacity and outstanding technique. Now we see the likes of Paul Pogba continuing this legacy with the excellent Tanguy Ndombele waiting for his chance in the wings. The melting pot of French society however also sees a number of young players come through that star for the countries either of their birth or that of their parents.

This is the case for Ibrahim Sangare, the Toulouse midfielder who was born in the Ivory Coast before making the move to France as a youngster. The midfielder made his first-team breakthrough two years ago as an 18-year-old but it was not until the 2017/18 season that he was able to make a significant impact on the first team. Used primarily as a defensive midfielder in the initial stages of his first-team career, he quickly became one of the top tacklers in his position in the French league and opponents found him exceptionally difficult to dribble against in central areas. This season so far has seen Sangare not only build on his defensive output but add a more attacking aspect to his game. Still only 20 the young midfielder is still an exceptional defensive prospect but he has also added the ability to resist the opposition press whilst in possession of the ball as well as the ability to dribble past opposition players. If Toulouse are to have the opportunity to close the gap at the top of the table to PSG then the emergence of players like Sangare will be key.

Physically, Sangare is everything that you might want in a modern central midfielder, standing at 6ft3 he uses his long limbs to hold opposition players off and to manipulate the ball through and around opponents. He also boasts the technical ability to control and manipulate the ball in tight areas of the field as his side enter the attacking phase. In the defensive phase of play, Sangare covers space exceptionally well across the width of the field as he moves to cover for his full-backs who move into high areas of the field in the attacking phase. He is also adept at pressing quickly when the situation arises. Indeed in the defensive phase, we have seen Sangare perform a similar role to the one that the Brazilian midfielder Fabinho adopted at AS Monaco before his move to Liverpool.

In this article, we will take a deeper look at the strengths of Ibrahim Sangare....

Chelsea are apparently interested in him, as an alternative to Rice. A price of 30mil is rumored. I liked him while he was still in France, wanted Barca to take a gamble on him, he looked like a younger Yaya at that time.

He is still only 24, and after Tchouameni could be the best option as a Busi replacement, but Barca won't even try to get him, no DNA and shit like that.

Well, we were prepared to pay 60m for Zubimendi, Sangare probably wouldn't even cost that much.

It's more like I can't see it happen because he's not a Busi clone.

Shouldn't be that expensive. Guessing 40m will do. They renewed him in August until 2027 which could make it a bit harder.

PSV record sales are Lozano (45m), Memphis (34m), Malen (30m) and Bergwijn (30m), all of whom were young, offensive and hyped players.
