Lazy comparison perpetuated by the media. A young Busquets was winning the CL, Rodri is middle aged by comparison to Sergio - by his current age Busquets had already won every club trophy at least twice
There are similarities but Rodri is nowhere near the passer that Busquets is. He's intelligent & level headed so a simple comparison to be made. Pep would be the best to develop under but Busquets got this at 19

We've got Vidal. He was our best midfielder by far last season. Even in that debacle at Anfield he stood out as someone with grit.

I think that majority of clubs, even Pep, are going back to basics, where a pivot's main role is to first defend and then to have an awesome forward game.
About Busi, he is more of a creator than defender.
Which is good in some situations, but a huge burden in majority of a CL matches.
In terms of stats this season:
Tackles:
Rodri 3,0
Ndo 1,9
Interceptions:
Rodri 1,2
Ndo 0,9
Clearances:
Rodri 2,0
Ndo 0,3
Even Pep probably wants a good old pivot who is awesome at defending and yet good on the ball, than having the opposite skills.
In 2006 we won a Cl with Edmilson as a pivot who was technically inferior to Rodri.
Yet, we had enough of a creative magic from Ronaldinho, Etoo, Messi, Xavi and Deco.
My point: Busi was an anomaly.
Not exactly a prototype of a pivot which we should be looking for in the future.
(You didn't mention Busi, but people are often talking about new Busis...)

FYI De Jong stacks up kind of in between those numbers (tad higher in interceptions I think).
And Atletico's other midfielders, particularly Saul (but also Koke and Partey), compare well with Rodri. So it could also be a product of their style, or it could be both Rodri and Saul are very good in a range of defensive duties. Rodri with a modest buyout compared to market value seems like a great move by Pep and City--I give them that.

We do need to get rid of deadwood but more important is striking for the best targets now and worrying about that latter. Maybe with another midfield buy the vets know their place and further motivation to cooperate for a move. Most of the vets still want to play footy, not be bench fodder. Some might find Serie A's or Ligue 1s pace extends their status and effectiveness. Or they can probably get paid even more in the EPL.

Imagine what a coach like Valverde will do with such talents. I would say on average we can win 30:0 because you didn't fracture our genius manager.
