Martins, Willian Carvalho and several other Sporting players are free to leave this summer after they terminated their contracts because of some chaos with the team getting attacked.

Will be interesting who gets him.

Atletico have signed Gelson Martins on a free transfer. Good signing though I think they could have problems when Sporting will demand money for players who have unilaterally broken their contracts with them.

The funny thing is, Atleti offered 30 mil, and Sporting rejected, later they offered Vietto and Moreira in exchange, Sporting again rejected, and now in the end they got him for free :lol:

Yes, but Sporting will demand 60M which was his release clause and then who knows what court/CAS/FIFA/whoever will make a final decision will say. That's why they tried to reach an agreement with Sporting like Betis did for W. Carvalho.

As far as I know, Atleti already had meetings with FIFA to see if Martins has legally rescinded his contract with Sporting. That's why it took them this long to announce him.

I'm sure Sporting won't let Gelson just leave on a free transfer easily so this could go on in courts for months (and negatively affect Gelson personally and possibly whole team) and at the end Atletico might still pay a pretty high transfer fee. There were also rumours they could get a transfer ban (don't know how realistic this is though).

He's a talented player no doubt but don't know if he's good enough to (potentially) go through all legal problems his signing could cause for the club.

Looks like Sporting are going to report this to FIFA.

I'm sure that Atletico and Gelson will have a strong case here because of the shit that went down at Sporting last season.
