This game was a perfect example of how fundamental the luck-factor is in football. Spain were far and away the better team throughout the game, but England won the game and were even in front by 3-0.

Also, the ref made one of the worst decisions I have ever seen in a football match by not giving the penalty and the red card for the English GK.

What was lucky about the half time scoreline? Just because a team can monopolize possession that doesn't mean defending counters is optional.

In fact, for majority of the last 6-7 years, post Pep, post Xavi, post goldne La Masia generation and post Spain, this repeats all the time.

Possession game works against minor opponents.
And when you face an equal opponent: bang, you are killed on counters in 90% of cases and not a single true possession team won any major trophies since then.

Even Barca is 2015' was more direct oriented compared to classic Barcas.

When this happens 100 times in a row, it is not an accident anymore.
A possession game against big teams is quite sterile in attack lately, and extremely prone and weak against counters.

Possession based teams need to play against park buses all the time, and they struggle with breaking them.
And while they are trying to break the bus and pushing forward with 10 players, they are leaving an insane holes in their defense for counters, which are quite easy to expose by any semi-decent big team.

What is the solution?
Well, speed up your transition and try to avoid playing against parked buses.
Plus, if needed, give away some possession (Lucho's 2015 style), invite an opponent to your half and THEN kill them with your counters.

SOME possession, counters and set pieces is what is making the difference between 50:50 teams after 2012'.
Not a slow, sterile, passing sideways till death possession for the sake of possession game.

Croatia - Spain should be interesting. Both sides playing open football and looking for a result.
