Whoever thinks Messi does not cause imbalance is kidding themselves. With both Messi and Suarez playing, it should be either a 4-4-2 or Suarez on the left wing in a 4-3-3.
It's not a tragedy to loose a game once in a while. Every team looses a game or two at some point. But the embarrassment we suffered yesterday is far beyond anything excusable. They had 2-0 and 3-1 and kept the ball with ease, dominating the gsme, even toying with our superstars. At Camp Nou. Betis.
Absolutely inexcusable, first and foremost from the Retardo Valverde, who is an extremely irritating guy and then from every player that was on the pitch yesterday. The team is worth 700-800 mil euros and they played like a segunda team. Embarrassing stuff.

Too many managers have been overwhelmed by Messi post Guardiola. They failed to resist the temptation to use him as a safety net, and as a fast and easy way to achieve results domestically, due to how decisive he can be over 38 games on average. It takes real balls and football (tactical) knowledge to have Messi and not use him as some sort of joker card that hides your shortcomings as a manager.
This has contributed to Messi being less and less disciplined in terms of tactics, with worse movement as years passed. This is what happens when too many average managers pander to star players.
Valverde is a new low in this respect though. Whatever the previous managers did in relation to Messi, Valverde is a flat out servant in front of the old guard. Man has absolutely no power at the team, he's a simple man in charge of way too many challenges in the squad. I bet Messi, Suarez, Pique and Busi gather at trainings and tell Ernesto what drills they want to do today and he tells them to do it and let him know when they're done.

Considering Messi reportedly(acc to multiple outlets) talked with Valverde about Malcom a week ago which coincided with Malcom finally being used you have a point there.
Which is just even worse. You needed him to go to Valverde and ask what's wrong with Malcom and why he's not playing for him to finally get a chance to play.

I mean Suarez's quote was pretty telling last season that he felt that he should have rested vs Leganes ahead of the Second leg in the CL vs Roma. Or when Pique was basically on one leg and Valverde just stood by and let them play without calling the shots himself.

This is a squad with a multitude of challenges only a top class manager could realistically cope with and lead it to great titles. Not necessarily a famous manager. But someone with a gift for handling difficult squads.
- Get aging stars who have 2-3 more seasons in them to be focused for the easier games and play their best in the big games.
- Find playing time for the promising young talents in the team
- Establish the rule of meritocracy. Punish everyone for a string of bad games, not just conveniently make an example of the newcomers while turning a blind eye when the veterans play like shit.
- Promote players from the youth ranks who show talent and quality. Give them more than garbage minutes in odd line-ups with players who barely trained together several times.
- Find ways to win titles playing the entertaining football fans expect from Barca, and have every right to expect, considering the quality of the players at disposal.
- Rotate in a way as to keep everyone fresh with the end game in mind. Like in chess, you don't plan for 1 move ahead, but for 7-8.
He could maybe cope with 1 and do great. But managing a squad with so many challenges? Man is completely out of his depth. You need to have a real gift to be able to run with so many question marks and find a satisfying answer to all of those, or at least most of them.
To make a comparison, he's like a decent piano player trying to play La Campanella by Liszt. He isn't advanced enough to do it. He doesn't know to, so he is at least smart enough to not even try it.
Maybe Valverde is not coward at all and we misjudged him. Maybe he knows his level, and his place, and doesn't want to jeopardize his future career opportunities post Barcelona, by going out on a limb here.
