Ronaldo won because Bayern failed miserably against him during cl semi.

And of course that famous 'ronaldo cheered and rallied Portugal at Euro final'

Other than that, Messi excells.
Bayern actually didn’t fail miserably. They were very much in that tie until Vidal was incorrectly sent off. What happened then was Ronaldo scored 2 offside goals in extra time, the first of which was quite blatant.

Overall the refereeing in both legs was shocking.

Madrid were extremely lucky last season in both La Liga and the Champions League.

Funny thing is football has always been about having the best team, it's impossible that one person will shine without the help of others. Even if a player create a chance but the finisher doesnt finish it- is it bcos the chance isnt created well enough or is it the finisher isnt good enough? Ultimately, it becomes a "chicken or egg" dilemma. It becomes more apparent in big stages that you simply need a team that performs well to produce goals and results and ultimately make everyone's performance more significant and effective. Without a good defence, u cant have a good midfield; without a good midfield, u cant have a good attack.

If Harry Kane were to replace Ronaldo in Real Madrid, could he have performed better than Ronaldo? Quite possibly.

Evidently, in the World Cup, both Messi and Ronaldo are outperformed by players from countries like Germany and Spain, even Klose, Muller and Iniesta may seem to perform better than the both of them.

And doesnt matter if a team's world class or not, your team has to have chemistry, form, depth, morale, and sometimes it takes one idiot to fuck up everything and sometimes an unlikely hero to make everything right. Not to mention, football does require a little luck sometimes as well.

Overall, a trophy isnt quite a pure reflection of an individual player ability and rating; let alone trying to compare these players when they are in different teams against different opponents. Although I must say when Messi has a team that performs, he certainly outshines Ronaldo in many aspects and does seem alot more superior.

Still, Ballon d'or is terribly flawed. More so, with a voting system and not based on performance rating or stats. Such system are bound to have favouritism. It's also really hard to gauge one's individual capability, within such a complex sports itself, where pretty much everyone is highly dependant on everyone else.

They were pretty lucky in the CL, though much less so than they were the year prior in 15/16 . The Bayern games were a sham. 2 incorrect red cards had Bayern spend 70 out of 210 minutes a man down in a crucial tie. The momentum shift both times it happened was very clear. The offside goals were the killing blow. Neuer playing through a broken foot (and missing the rest of the season after that match IIRC) was just icing on the cake for them.

They were also lucky in the final considering Juve very clearly looked the superior side in the 1st half despite conceding early. They were relentlessly pressing RM and attacked them hard, and ultimately scored that beauty of an equalizer. It's hard to think of any other critical matches like this where a team's 1st half vs 2nd half performance is so shockingly dissimilar. It lends credence to the stories about whatever happened during HT where all the key Juve vets were at each other's throats and went on to subsequently implode in the 2nd half. Bonucci denies fighting Barzagli and Mandzukic denies the quotes about Alves and Bonucci's alleged hatred and arguing leading up to the match and during it, but the fallout after that match suggests there's truth to it. What other reason explains swiftly selling Bonucci to AC Milan? Alves' rants about Juve after leaving them also points to clear animosity. In any case, all of this was very convenient for RM who were easily able to take advantage of Juve's chaos and disorganization, totally dominating them in the second half.

Unlike 15/16 tho, they definitely were the most superior team in the CL last season. Even if they probably shouldn't have won as things went vs. Bayern and could've ended up losing to Juve had they maintained their discipline, RM were better than both teams considering all things in the CL and domestically. Out of a hypothetical 100 games I'd say they'd have beaten Bayern like 70 times and Juve even more than that. They're simply too strong in all aspects of their squad and have a strong champions mentality which is a huge deal in the CL. And while Zidane is no genius, he is simply too damn competent to fail with the assets he has. Even if Bayern and Juve had been at their top level, RM would probably have been favorites to win that CL anyway but they wouldn't have been as unstoppable as their string of KO round results seems to suggest.

I don't think think they were the superior team last year in any of the competitions... Dortmund dominated them in both legs of the group stages and they caught a lucky break against Bayern. That game must have galvanised them because they showed great spirit after that.

You need a slice of luck to win the Champions League and Barcelona have had their fair share over the years particularly at away games. For me Barcelona's most impressive campaign away was actually 2011/12 but they just came up against a stubborn Chelsea as well as 2014/15.

He probably thought Messi's winning it, and tried to be there to look like he's the man behind Messi's success, boost his likeability. Well, from the forced smile in the picture we can tell it went pretty fkin badly.

I think CR Jr is just looking in this direction because of the laughter and in his corner there are only stone faces.
BTW is it just my eyes or this kid really has plucked eyebrows like his father? If that's the case then... oh, man...:surrender:
