That was six years ago. If you asked me who the better player is right now, I would say Ronaldo. He has closed the gap on Messi when many thought that he couldn't. Messi was leading 4-1 in Ballon Dor's remember and now its tied at 5-5 and that is because Ronaldo has been better than Messi delivering in the CL. We have to be brutally honest here.

LOL Ballon dor fanboys are funny.

He will never "close the gap" for objective people with eyes. He might for people who can see only numbers, but they don t actualy understand sport.
I will repeat what eaman said, put Ronaldo in this current Barca team and see how he performs in in big CL matches. Who will pass him the ball?

It wasnt a "popularity contest" when Messi was leading 4-1 was it? Messi performing against Leganes isn't the same as Ronaldo performing against of the best sides in Europe. Messi has gone missing in the CL QF stages for a while now and you know it while CR7 has been on fire in the CL. He is breaking records left, right and centre. Messi should have been motivated to reply but he wasnt. He was just walking and wasnt making any movement for his teammates to find him, far too static.

Real Madrid midfield has been on fire in Cl not Ronaldo . Without services Ronaldo is as useless as GTA traffic signal . Put penaldo in current barca side , let's see whether he will be on fire . was penaldo sleeping when his team got banged in classico . Marcelo wasn't effective in classico and there goes penaldo missing . Ballon dor was and is will be a popularity contest irrespective of the winners . Messi don't need to win that to show that he is a better player

Portugal won the euro final without penaldo and the asshole was hiding behind the bushes in confederation cup during the shoot out . Portugal carried penaldo whole throughout the euro were as Messi carried Argentina to three finals .

Messi can't reply, because he needs to create the service for himself. He is dropping deep while Ronaldo has service from left (Marcelo), right (Benzema or Bale) and center (Kroos and Modrić). And when Messi tries to organise an attack, he has Suarez with touch of a rapist bottling it most of the time. The only move that worked a few months ago (Messi-Alba-Messi) has been found out and at that point Valverde should have looked at the other options. But he didn't.

So next year, with Griezmann here who can actually pass the ball and hopefully dropping Suarez, I see Messi scoring less (not a lot, but less), but organising the attacks more.

Difference is with Ronaldo on the pitch, the opponent needs to change their defending in the box. With Messi on the pitch, the opponent must change their defending on the whole pitch.

You forget that Ronaldo hasn't only done it at RM, he has done it at Utd too. He was way out of his comfort zone at Utd but he still succeeded despite all the obstacles and improved himself. He has proven that he can play in any league in the world and succeed. Messi has been privilege to play for one club and around arguably the greatest midfielders of all time in Xavi and Iniesta.

Yeah way out of the comfort zone playing with Scholes , Giggs , Rooney and with the guidance of Greatest manager of all time were as Messi began his career under rookie Rijkard and then Guardiola . Won treble with Enrique who was managing As Roma and celta vigo before . won league titles with Tito and valverde . Penaldo ? . Had the privilege of playing under Saf , Mourinho , Pelegrini , Ancelotti and Zidane . Yeah so much of obstacles . Barcelona was recovering from the dark days of Gaspart when Messi made his debut and united was on the back of a treble win dominating europe when penaldo came to England . Messi along with xavi , dinho , Iniesta made Barcelona invincibles were as United was treble winners before penaldo

Good points, but you say rookie Rijjkard, but what about Zidane? He was as Rookie a manager as you can get, yet Ronaldo helped Real to 2 CL's with him and a league title.

you don't think that Messi would have performed similar to Ronaldo in arguably the best premier league team in history under a legendary manager in Sir Alex? I would also like to point out that Ronaldo almost didn't win the CL in 2008 when he missed a penalty in the shootout. His teammate helped him. Plus Messi had GOAT performances even when Enrique put more emphasis in attack than in midfield with Xavi and Iniesta

Replace Ronaldo with Luka Modric i agree. Where was Real before Modric ? ? . Getting knocked out by Dortmund , Lyon etc .

I'm just saying you're contradicting yourself saying Rookie Rijkaard and Guardiola, when Zidane was a rookie manager himself.

Zidane was the first Rookie manager Ronaldo had to play under . Look at the stature he enjoys at Madrid and in world football . Not to forget that Ronaldo was a veteran of over 10 years experience when Zizou became manager and Messi was a teenage player who needed guidance of a experienced manager at that time . Messi - Rijkaard & Pep

Ronaldo - SAF

who had to overcome obstacles ? Who was out of comfort zone ? Messi who was comming of from Argentina to a completely new atmosphere and style of football or Ronaldo with a smooth transition from Sporting to United under the greatest ever manager .

Which teams were dominating world when both made debut ? . When Messi was learning his tricks in La masia we even finished 6th . United were treble winners and the most popular brand in world football

Getting kicked about in training and dealing with the miserable English weather after coming from a hot climate wasnt easy I can assure you. also adapting to the very physical English game and learning a new language and culture too, you dont take these things into consideration. He was WAY out of his comfort zone and he could have easily broke but he didn't. He had to change his game too because SAF and the players told him to stop diving as its not seen as acceptable in English football.

Also his father died during the middle of all that which didn't help of course but he stayed at it. Ronaldo is mentally strong and that is the 100% truth.

Bullcrap . All the obstacles you mentioned are far easy to overcome compared to the obstacles Messi had to face comming to europe with a growth hormone deficiency , new climate , atmosphere , style of football , language . Not to forget that Barcelona weren't world beaters neither did they had Sir Alex Ferguson at that time

Ronaldo did score in that game, don't forget that. Ronaldo's record in finals speaks for itself. When was the last time he lost a final?
