Remember those games were teams would give us 14 corners because we didn't have anyone in the box who could actually punish teams at set pieces. Remember when teams would foul us time and time agian because if a cross is made there is no one who is a top threat there.

We had Mathieu who himself was a monster in the air and his usefulness in set pieces didn't come close to making his defensive performances worth playing as anything more than 3rd choice CB in any situation. He even scored crucial goals for us that nobody cared to mention when he made a massive mistake on the defensive end.
For a defender, their defensive contribution is what is most important, and Mina isn't even on Bartra's level in that aspect.

Would he even play in these tough games tho? I can't really see Valverde starting Mina instead of Pique in an important CL game or just subbing him on unless its like the 90th min and we are desperate and out of other options.
To get his strengths on offense the coach has to trust him as a defender first so thats what has to be improved before we can even talk about him deciding close games.
As things stands he would probably not even be in the squad for these games with Lenglet coming as CB nr 3.
