Yeah that's true, but I don't think he was ever taken that seriously as an elite CB. Even during the WC win
He was very good. One of the world best performing CB at the time.

I disagree.
Umtiti was widely highly rated in his 2 seasons here until world cup.
Many thought he is a beast and world class. To say he was " never established in the upper echelons of CBs" is wrong tbh.
Sure, there are many who doubted him, but it is same case for almost every world class player
