How toothless have his shots become? Everytime he cocks the hammer you just know it's gonna me one of those tepid efforts that never put the keeper in more than slight trouble.

At least Raki shoots from time to time. Almost no other efforts from the edge of the box.
We rarely tried long shots obviously but there is a difference between a 30m and 20m distance from goal. And also notice how we rarely have anyone close to goal lurking for rebounds. It is because Suarez and Messi stopped to attack the 6 yard box entirely.

Cant see anyone paying 8m for Rakitic and where he would go.
The option will be leave for free this summer or next.

Yeah, no one is paying us to sign him.
Our only hope is that he takes a 3-4 year contract somewhere else over a higher salary here in his last season. Sevilla being obvious choice due to family ties and his time there
Honestly would piss him off for free at this stage if it came to it. If it means we won't have to see him wear this jersey next season it'll be worth it.

Busquets, pivot who can't defend too much due to age, being slow and extremely weak physically.
Alena: a CAM, isn't a natural defender
Puig: lol
De Jong: a funky pivot who is questionable in positional defending, ventures a lot
Pjanic: old, slow, let's see how he will defend, I don't believe that he is a better defender than Vidal and Rakitic
That team listed above is ok in terms of being younger, in terms of movement and passing/technique.
But that team is horrible in terms of defending.
Remember how Atletico, Roma, Liverpool were hurling 20 long balls and crosses into our half and into our box all the time because our team is horrible in the air.
These set of players is even worse than our current team who is already the weakest in Europe in the air.
Imagine having something like De Jong, Alena, Puig, 2 short fullbacks and then ANY team starting to hurl long balls and crosses whenever they have the ball.
The only question is whether they will create 15 or 20 clear chances:
Whats the point of picking the worst possible combination out of these players? Its like looking at Madrids midfield options and try to prove a point with James - Isco - Modric.
In general Busquets-Frenkie+X is (theoretically) our defensively best midfield setup in ages. Busquets (like Rakitic at DM) is still very good at covering a lot of space (not through running, but positionally), Frenkie is topclass defensively (for a CM). Pjanic is a hard worker (like prime Rakitic). I am not a fan of Alena, but we need to have some bodies in midfield. We will see what happens with Rakitic and Vidal.
One last point: you severely mischaracterized our Roma/Liverpool defeats if you think they are down to our inability to handle high balls.

Liverpool/Rome losses go down to weak mental game. IMO.
This team obviously lacks leadership and character. Most of the players crack under any pressure, if they are not in their comfort zone. (Camp Nou or Copa del rey)
