I would like to ask the question about the level of football in La Liga, and Europe.

The quality of the champions league is falling precipitously. Look at the last 16 for instance. Stuggart were shocking. I mean they really were awful. AC Milan were a disgrace and the players didn't deserve to wear the Milan jersey. It was a testimonial game at Old Trafford for Beckham. Milan lacked all the makings of a great, great club. Florentina were very poor defensively, as were Bayern. Besides Ribery and Robben and Jotekic(think that's his name) the game lacked any real top class talent. As for Lyon, who are having a bad season in a poor league. These guys managed to beat Real Madrid, who besides Ronaldo and Alonso, have no real class either. Higuain seems to struggle on the big stage and Kaka has done nothing on four years(except in 06/07 champions league). Casillias is a top keeper, but other than that, Madrid are very ordinary.

I know Inter beat Chelsea, but Chelsea are having an incalculable amount of problems with their players and injuries. I saw the two Inter games against Barca and they looked like they couldn't put 5 passes together. Real lack of talent in midfield. I rate Chelsea a lot and feel the Champions league is much more likely to go to Barca as Barca simply can't beat Chelsea 11 v 11.

United have been carried this season by Rooney. I've spoken to a lot of United fans and they even admit they have a very ordinary team without Rooney. Their midfield is very ordinary.

Only Barcelona have a team capable of being compared to Johan's "Dream Team" or United's Treble winning team. We have 2 world class midfielders in Iniesta and Xavi. And Xavi is the most important player in the team when we play against a really good side. Messi is world class, but I'm not so sure he's as good as Ronaldinho when he was at his peak. Dani Alves was a great signing. And of coure we had Eto'o and Henry last year playing great.

I made this thread because I think back to the year United won the champions league in 99. Barca had players like rivaldo, Figo, Enrique, Cocu, Xavi, Kluivert. And yet, they were struggling to get into fourth.

Look at Bayern and Juventus now: They really are in dire need of reform. The Italian league is in travesty. La Liga has really declined. 7 years ago you had: Madrid, Deportivo, Valenica, Barcelona. They were real top class teams, and La Liga was on a different planet.

The premeriship is on a similar decline now. Arsenal are overrated, it was made obvious last night, and against Chelsea and United. Liverpool really are a poor side in terms of what they should be. United and Chelsea seem to be on the decline.

I know a lot of people will disagree, but the standard of football really is falling.

8 years ago: Zidance, Rivaldo, Figo, Maldini, Ronaldo, Raul, etc.... all at their peak.

Today: Messi, Ronaldo, Xavi, Rooney, Drogba, Iniesta, etc..... can they be compared to the above?

Not the same in my opinion. Rooney has only shown the talent this year, that was promised years ago.

Nope.

I do think that teams that were usually cannon fodder for the top teams, have become better at dealing with being the under dog. Except for La Liga, which has had the reverse.

Anxiously waiting for the next match
we beat stutgart
stuttart beat bayern
bayern beat united
anyone can beat anyone on any day that is the beauty of footy...

Too much there to argue against tbh, but put simply no I don't think it is. European football is always going in cycles. English football has dominated and is now dipping down again, Liverpool shit, Chelsea old, Arsenal ok but not true contenders, United decent but reliant on Rooney. Real should really be in the 1/4s, but the likes of Valencia, Sevilla will have important summers. If they weaken there's no chance of a Spanish dominance next season, Italy is still rebulding slowly.

Well everything is cyclical in football, I believe. When there is an up turn there will always be a down turn.

I think the list of players can be compared in talent for sure, but there will always be an edge in favour for the players in the first list because by and large their careers are over - well certainly their peak has long gone - so we know what they achieved.

True the likes of Juve and Milan aren't the force they were 5-8 years ago. But as I said in my first sentence when there is an up turn there is also a down turn. That is life as a football club.

Bayern will always be a power house and a top 8 team in europe. There are periods when they are awesome 74-76 and 96-2001 where they were on the up. Then other periods like in the 80's, mid 00's where they were poor. But they are always around.

In england you have man u and chelsea competing for the title the past 5 seasons, with Arsenal before chelsea competing against the mancs. Then the likes of villa, city, spurs and everton who on their days are tough sides to beat and can beat the big 4 sides.

So for me we cannot say football is in decline. We can suggest football is on the downward cycle at the moment, but it will rise again.

Seeing new teams compete in europe and domestically also excites me. The russians and Ukrainians are getting better all the time and compete in the club tournaments. Seeing the likes of Bordeaux, Benfica, Lyon and some others young vibrant teams who it seems will go on to better stuff.

The stars are more concentrated on the big teams, thats why other competitors in the CL last 16 couldnt cope up. Tactically and from the intense, the game just got much much better than it was 10 years ago. I saw the CL final of 97 between Dortmund and Juve a few months ago - to me it looked more like what i am doing with my friends on a sunny saturday afternoon than a football match of the two best teams in europe. I also remember Bayerns football from 99-01, when they were the most sucussful team in europe. They were just miles below to what Barca, but also the usual suspects from the EPL show on the pitch nowadays.

ON a sidenote: Stuttgart were far from being awful. I dunno if you actually saw the 1st leg were Stuttgart was clearly the better team, or the 2nd leg where they were obv worse, but still showed more class than Arsenal did in the first 70 minutes yesterday. Bayern is also more than just Ribery and Robben, showing that you dont really follow this team either.

Also dont get foolded by some fancy sounding names from the past. Todays players are overall better trained than the generation before. And that make them not only more complete with less flaws, but more fit as well.

Football isn't on a decline, just a mini blip. When the Italian clubs get it together then you will notice a big difference.

Complicated question. There is so many aspects to consider. One thing is sure, football is now more faster and athletic. So in those aspects it is better if you appreciate athleticism.
I do think however that football from the 90s was better to watch and for some that's the most important thing in the game.
I would say that as a game it is on decline.

I think it is becoming more and more accessible to more and more people, better coverage and the internet has helped loads. The more demand the longer it will live on for, so I would say that it is not on the decline. In addition it is becoming more physical, demanding higher skill from the best players, and better marketed. i think that it is on the ascendancy in terms of quality and global impact.

I will quote that Scottish weirdo Irvine Welsh:
Football now, to be honest, it bores me. You can publish the salaries of the teams and then you look at the standings and they are almost the same.

How you can compare the current barcelona team to manchester united treble winning team is beyond me,they were outplayed in the champions league final and deserved to lose.
